The People Under the Stairs (DVD, 2003)

Wes Craven, Everett McGill|Theatrical release: 1991 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Fool, a 13-year-old boy, lives in the ghetto with his sister and sick mother. When his family doesn't have enough money to pay the rent, Fool is persuaded by Leroy (Ving Rhames) to break into his landlord's house to steal a valuable coin collection. Once Fool and Leroy are inside the huge and heavily fortified house, they realize they've gotten more than they bargained for, as the landlords turn out to be an insane brother and sister couple (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie) who murder visitors and keep their kidnapped "sons" locked up in the basement as deformed monsters. Only Alice, an imprisoned girl, can save Fool from the horrors within, and a frantic chase begins between the walls of the bizarre house as Fool tries to save himself, Alice, and his community from the evil landlords. A unique and inventive horror film, THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS combines the structure of a classic fairy tale with modern social criticism and imaginative production design. Director Wes Craven based his film on real-life news reports of parents who kept their children locked up at home.

I love this movie

This is one of my favorite childhood movies. That may sound kind of crazy considering the brother and sister freak-fest that are the main protagonists of this story. None the less, I still love the movie for it's inventiveness with the way the house was fortified so they could live their sick life the way they wanted. One of Wes Craven's most satisfying movies.

A Must See

Classic "B" style horror movie.

Ties in a lot with bioshock if you pay attention.
Little girls running through the walls...
Evil guy called Big Daddy, running around the house with a big gun...

Hmm :)

And you get Ving as Leroy. An early version of Marsellus Wallace.

Good popcorn flick.

Great movie, excellent directing, dark humor

I bought this DVD for a friend for her birthday because she kept talking about it. She was thrilled! I watched the movie for the first time last night. I love this movie! It comes off as a horror film, but unless you're easily spooked, it's more of a dark comedy. The story line is a bit creepy, but amazing. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone that likes to stray from the norm and have a good laugh.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time.Wes Craven really went above and
beyond my expectations.I am a big fan of Everitt Mcgill and I think his portrayal of a homicidal maniac has always stuck with me.This is one of those
movies I can watch again and again and never get bored.I actually bought two
brand new copies of this movie because the price was too good to pass up.I'm
not even going to break the seal on the second one until I completely wear out
the first copy!
