Much of their following idolized Alex Lifeson, who was a guitar hero with the technical ability of a Page or a Beck. Occasionally Neil Peart's lyrics leave a little to be desired: "the shifting shafts of shining, weave the fabric of their dreams . . ." Jon Anderson from Yes was afflicted with the same condition of pretentiolyricitus. That aside, the music is faultless.

Permanent Waves...still making waves for Rush!

Created: 02/12/06
What can I say? Rush is Rush...and Permanent Waves is one of their best offerings over the thirty odd years Rush has been making music! The lyrics on this one are sometimes so highly poetic that you have difficulty believing that this is hard, metal-type Rock, and yet the driving guitar rythmns and the fabulous vocals that knock your socks off remind you that it most certainly is!

Drummer Neil Peart is at his best with this one, sending the hard-driving rythmn through your entire body, while Geddy Lee soars above the sound to leave us in a pleasant state of shock. Alex lifeson's lyrics are almost too poetic for this music, but heck, who cares? The music is so great, you accept that and go with the flow! Lifeson's guitar is too wonderful to sweat the small stuff!

I bought this to add to my own collection of Rush, after 25 years of building the collections of three now-adult kids and two grandkids. I figured I owed myself a few great old albums, and Rush will always be one of my favorites.

If you are a Rush fan, Permanent Waves has GOT to be in your CD case!

Catch Some Waves

Created: 21/02/11
As I recall, this album was the one that propelled Rush into the new wave decade, forcing even hard core Rush-snobs to sit up and take notice. But to anyone listening carefully this album was no real surprise; after all, the previous album "Hemispheres" was similar in both the tightness of the instrumentation and the ambitious scope. What made this collection different was the overall sound had become more accessible; the material was top-notch and the timing was impeccable. "The Spirit of Radio" is arguably the best Rush song ever, right up there with "Tom Sawyer." "Freewill", "Jacobs Ladder" and "Natural Science" are all vintage Rush, a portrait of a band either at or near the peak of their power. Even Geddy's vocals are toned down an octave or two, allowing the listener to actually appreciate the times when he hits those incredibly high "Geddy-notes", such as in the final verse of "Freewill." And of course Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart are incredible throughout, Alex's guitar work particularly sharp on "Freewill" and "Entre Nous" and Neil's power-forged drumming all over "Spirit of Radio" and "Natural Science." There ain't many bands that ever make an album like this one, my friends; it's a diamond that has no rough edges.

Excellent, and accessible prog!

Rush, rulers of the universe, unveiled this masterpiece to the world on New Year's Day in 1980. I wish I had been around to hear it while it was still fresh.

This album contains quite possibly the greatest Rush song ever, "Natural Science." That song alone justifies the purchase of this album. But this short album is loaded with great material, boasting classics such as "Freewill" and "Jacob's Ladder" on it's track list. "Different Strings" is also a nice breather of a track that is quite good on it's own. I'm kind of indifferent to "Entre Nous." It feels out of place amidst the great tracks surrounding it, and is just okay.

Geddy's Bass playing is, as always, amazing, and his voice is strong (or annoying for the nay-sayers). The keyboards are pretty simplistic on this album, but that's fine with me. Lifeson shines throughout with excellent solos and his wonderfully oddly-structured chords. Peart, well, he's a drum god.

I wish popular music were as good as Rush is on this album. An excellent introduction for non-fans.

Much deserving 5 out of 5.

An outstanding album from three masters of music. They are true artists. Spirit of the Radio, Freewill, and Jacob's Ladder are the best known tracks. ButEntre Nous, Different Strings, and Natural Science are masterpieces of music as well.

As far as RUSH goes...it doesn't get any finer than this album! This album is solid platinum from beginning to end, and has the greatest Rush song of all time, "Spirit of Radio" as it's opening track! "Freewill" is probably their second greatest song as well as the second track! "Entre Nous" shows Rush's softer side. "Natural Science" is one of Rush's notable opuses, with some great guitar solo work by Alex Lifeson. This is THE Rush album to own if you can only own one!
