Album Notes
PETE TOWNSHEND LIVE contains a bonus CD featuring Eddie Vedder recorded live during Pete Townshend's 1997 benefit for Maryville Academy.Personnel: Pete Townshend (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Eddie Vedder (vocals); Tracey Langran (hi-string guitar, background vocals); Peter Hope-Evans (harmonica, mouth organ); Jon Carin (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Chucho Merchan (bass, percussion); Jody Linscott (percussion).Recorded live at The House Of Blues, Chicago, Illinois on August 16, 1998.Personnel: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Tracey Langran (vocals, guitar, background vocals); Jon Carin (vocals, keyboards, drums); Eddie Vedder (vocals); Peter Hope-Evans (harmonica, Jew's harp); Chucho Merchán, Jody Linscott (percussion).Audio Mixer: Andy MacPherson.Recording information: House Of Blues, Chicago, IL (08/16/1998).Photographers: John Zomot; Paul Natkin. For years, Pete Townshend has performed a benefit concert at Chicago's House of Blues, with all of the proceeds going to the Maryville Academy (which helps treat physically, sexually, and emotionally abused children). 1999's double-disc PETE TOWNSHEND LIVE: A BENEFIT FOR MARYVILLE ACADEMY is made up of one disc of 11 solo highlights and a second bonus disc with longtime Who fan Eddie Vedder guesting on two tracks. Disc one contains an interesting cover, Canned Heat's "On the Road Again," as well as reworked Who nuggets ("Won't Get Fooled Again," "Magic Bus," "Drowned," and others), plus several solo compositions ("Let My Love Open the Door," "Now and Then"). This is easily Pete Townshend's best solo live album thus far, and like the concerts, all proceeds from the disc go to charity.

Editorial Reviews
3.5 stars out of 5 - ...this charity set simmers, emphasizing the soulful insides of Townshend's songs....The best moments...come when the swift, melodic arcs and piquant harmonics of [his] writing push against the...easeful acoustic and blues settings...

Pete Townshend LIVE -- House of Blues, Chicago

Created: 11/06/09
From the cover, I thought it was going to be an acoustic set from Pete but it's NOT!! It's full rock and roll!! The sound quality of this show is AMAZING!! Soundboard without a doubt! From The Who songs he sang (Anyway, You better, Won't get fooled, or Magic Bus) all just rock out! Eddie Vedder helps out on vocals on a few of the tracks too. Pete also goes and sings a few of his solo songs too. "Let my love open the door" sounds great and the solos are fantastic. I wish I was at this show! I saw The Who in 1989 at Alpine Valley and it was great! This disc sounds great and has fantastic energy! I'm not the biggest Who fan but Pete rocks out and I would tell you that you're going to love the sound quality and the rock and roll!! Picked this up on Ebay for less than one dollar! What a fantastic find!!

Controversial yet worthwhile album - nice variations

Created: 30/11/05
Jon Carin's producing of this album has copped a lot of flak, as has Pete's vocals and supposedly erratic guitar work. But this doesn't mean it's not got its good points. This is a one-off - a benefit concert in Chicago, and the result is unusually strong, considering what he was setting out to do (which must have included not scaring too many people in the audience!). I like the relative simplicity of certain tracks, and his newer post-Who material is probably better than anything on the album. It's a double album but there's not much on the 2nd CD as I recall. But it really is worth listening to, if you aren't too much of a died-in-the-wool 60s Who fan (and perhaps even if, like me, you are). Contains goodish liner notes - nice production as you would expect.

Pete Townsend Live by Pete Townsend

I like every thing about this album! Its live, and it lets you get in the spirit of the event. If you dont get in the mood for anything listening to this your dead. If you want to get in the "GROVE" the Magic Bus will get you there. ITS AWSOME THE WAY PETE FUNKS IT UP!!! WAY TO GO!!
If you Like the WHO, you'll like this. Pete showes himself as a true song writer and why he is thought of so HIGHLY! HIS TALLENTS ARE INCREDIBLE!!!

Good price...and I don't care what other reviewers said...I heard energy in Townsend's performance...just sounded like his voice was a bit hoarse...

Good purchase! Thanks...love North Country Girl...Just a little is enough...

Not Pete's greatest, but a solid listen.

This CD is worth buying for excellent versions of the Canned Heat gem "On the Road Again" and The Who's timeless "I'm one" alone. Other Who and Pete classics are so different from the originals on this CD that at times it becomes tiresome. Still. if your a Pete fan and can score this CD for cheap (as I did) you won't be disappointed.
