Phantasy Star Universe - PS2
Created: 14/03/08
Phantasy Star Universe offers two complete RPG experiences - a single-player action adventure spanning multiple planets, and a robust online multi-player component. The game offers long-time fans the epic experience they have been clamoring for. The solo adventure features more than 40 hours of gameplay, an emotionally engaging story, traditional cut scenes, and strong character development. The title's hero is Ethan Waber, a 17-year old cadet intent on saving his sister, who is living on a planet under siege by mysterious life forces called THE SEED. In Online Mode, players are given the opportunity to create their own characters from a range of races, and they get to explore all three planets in the Grarl solar system. Fans can travel with a squad of other adventurers, enter urban sprawls teeming with hundreds of other players, and build their avatars into powerful warriors.

Solid game, at least in single player. PSO better.

I like the Phantasy Star series. I liked Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast and the GameCube, and I like Phantasy Star Universe on the PS2. The only real problem I have with this installment is that in single player you have to play through several levels of the story mode before you can create your own character and play. Story mode spends a lot of time in cut scenes - not so much that it's unbearable, but almost. The graphics are good, not great. The story is good, and the selection of character types, although narrow, should have something for just about anyone. Game play goes smoothly, and holds the attention of everyone in my house, from 5 years old to adult.
If you have a game played up to the level required (4, I think) for creating your own characters, replayability is good. But if you have to play up the levels the cut scenes become tedious. Once you've seen them, they're of little value.
On a 4 out of 5 scale I would give the following ranks:
Story: 3
Graphics: 4
Game Play: 4
Character selection: 4
Replayability: 4 (3 if have to work back up to character creation level)

Frustratingly repetitive, lack of updates, yet fun.

Sega's Phantasy Star series has earned its place in the classics section of gaming history, but this one falls short of expectations. The game was ridiculously repetitive, with online being the only fun way to play(and unfortunately, pay). Even then, you find yourself playing the exact same thing an incredible amount of times. Weapon customization was improved, as were graphics and character creation, and it still had the classic feel of PSO, but it lacked the unreasonable replay value PSO 1&2 had.

I like the way this game immerse's you into the action and after a few hours of play its hard not to feel you are the character. It a action filled beat em up type game with good graphics and gameplay. Lots of fun weapons top off this game to make it a challenging yet satisfying PS2 game. Can't wait to see one on Ps3.
