Philippians by Frank Thielman (NIV Application)
Created: 18/08/06
This commentary provides solid exposition. Thielman interprets each passage in light of its contribution to the overall message & purpose of Philippians. When appropriate, Thielman discusses the Greek language behind a word or text, but he does not dwell on the Greek text. His hermeneutics are sound & his applications are relevant & thoughtful.
If you're looking for a very technical commentary on Philippians that deals with each Greek word & discusses in depth the history of critical scholarship concerning the book, don't get this book - look at the works by Gerald Hawthorne, Gordon Fee, & maybe in Moises Silva.
But, if you are looking for a commentary on Philippians that provides solid 1st century background information, discussion of the Greek where necessary, is conversant with previous scholarship, provides great helps for application, & is written in a very fresh style in a nice format, get Thielman. It's a very valuable book to have.

Up to date resources....author favors tradition if there is evidence for two possible translations...good academic book, but also a great aid at becoming more knowledable about Philippians on a faith level.
