Fallon; Roy Harper. After a two-year recording gap (the longest in their recording career up to that point), Led Zeppelin followed the rampant eclecticism of HOUSES OF THE HOLY with the embarrassment of riches that is PHYSICAL GRAFFITI. One could be forgiven for thinking of this expansive double-length set as Zeppelin's WHITE ALBUM. It's a great schizophrenic beast, the first side containing the most concentrated dose of pure hard-rock energy the band had delivered since their first two albums, and the second showing off the more subtle nuances of their talent. This is really Jimmy Page's album, from the masterfully moody Eastern setting of "Kashmir" to the poignant liquidity of "Down by the Seaside" and the furious riffing of "Trampled Under Foot." The 1950s-style rocker "Boogie with Stu" (featuring Stones pianist Ian Stewart) and the rural romp "Bron-Yr-Aur" add yet more colors to the spectrum of what may be the most emotionally satisfying album in the Led Zeppelin canon.

Probably Page's Best Work

Created: 04/07/07
This double album actually warranted being issued as a double album. No filler here! The band was in top form. The rhythm section of Bonham and Jones was swinging for the fences, Plant's banshee wail hadn't faded at the high end yet, and Page showed a mastery of his Gibson that mere mortals are not capable of. "Down By The Seaside" is a great example of a Zep song that just doesn't get the airplay it deserves. The shimmering liquidity of the guitar work on this track is probably one of the greatest examples of an instrument representing water ever laid down in a studio. The epic drone and Middle Eastern flavor of "Kashmir" needs no comment. "Night Flight" and "Boogie With Stu" are typical of Zeppelin in that they aren't like anything any other band at the time dared to put out. If you wish to introduce someone to the grand majesty of Led Zeppelin, this is a great place to start. Not a single dud, hard rockin' tracks, and some of their mellower material as well. It really shows the great versatility these rock gods possessed in their collective abilities. In my opinion, it is a better album for the beginning Led Zeppelin fan than their unnamed fourth album (Zoso) if only because they will probably not be as familiar with every track and the quality of the music is much more representative of their total career output. Enjoy!

ZEPPELIN'S FINEST MOMENT

Created: 26/03/07
No doubt about it, Led Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti" finds that band at the absolute pinnacle of their artistic and creative prowess. From the dramatic guitar riff on the ablum's opening cut (Custard Pie) to the bluesy metal drone of the the last track (Sick Again), Zeppelin's sonic capabilities were (and remain) unmatched.
Standout tracks: The Rover, Kashmir, Ten Years Gone, Sick Again.

Physical Graffiti [Remaster] - Led Zeppelin (CD 1994)

Created: 12/10/07
PG is the classic example of a double album that should have been a single album. Kashmir, In the Light, and Ten Years Gone maintain LZ's tradition of creative hard rock. However, there is way too much mindless hard rock filler. In My Time of Dying must have been stretched out just to fill up an album side -- listening to it is like a long, painful death. Since less is more, PG could have been a five star but I can only give it four.
