Movie synopsis

While it might sound outlandish to speak of THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS in the same sentence as CITIZEN KANE, in its own little neck of the cinematic woods the Judd Apatow/Seth Rogen comedy is perhaps just as groundbreaking. In fact, it's nearly impossible to think of another film that blends so seamlessly pitch-perfect stoner babble with high-octane action sequences. Dale Denton (Rogen), a process server with a weed fixation, witnesses a murder and turns to his dealer, Saul (James Franco), for support. The murderer is actually Saul's main drug supplier, and because of Saul's access to some extremely rare high-grade pot (called Pineapple Express) the two are quickly tracked down and put on the run. Like all Apatow/Rogen vehicles, the movie deals with the theme of men succumbing to adulthood and all the adjustments they are forced to make in the process. However, unlike KNOCKED UP and THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is just too wacky to offer any lessons. Still, there's more going on here than giggles and the munchies. Indie director David Gordon Green (SNOW ANGELS) brings a subtle auteur's touch to the proceedings, approaching the smoking scenes with his distinctively loose feel and giving the action sequences a wonderfully dated sheen that makes them look more like a fight from KNIGHT RIDER than the empty flash of 21st-century blow-‘em-ups. It is Franco, however, who truly steals this movie--he hasn't been this charming since his days on FREAKS AND GEEKS. There's only so many ways to play a stoner, but Franco puts his own endearing, lovable spin on the type, portraying Saul as a kind-hearted, well-intentioned yet hardcore dope smoker. Rogen and Apatow have proven themselves a nearly unstoppable juggernaut; here's hoping they bring Franco along on the ride a little more often.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "The script by Rogen and his SUPERBAD writing partner, Evan Goldberg, is a trippy wonder....Loaded with turbocharged action and nonstop giggles..."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (08/07/2008)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Fans of SUPERBAD will enjoy PINEAPPLE EXPRESS. It's a similar sweet-silly buddy comedy where everything that can go wrong does....Rogen and Franco have great comic chemistry."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (08/05/2008)

"PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is a fitfully amusing tale of drugs and crooks....[David Gordon Green] brings the movie his own loping, run-on style, which turns out to be a perfect expression of the stoner rhythm."
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (08/15/2008)

"It's interesting to watch Rogen play the 'straight' foil to Franco's stoner clown....Rogen's unique comedy engine is oiled by the tension between the urge to veg and the need to act responsibly..."
Los Angeles Times - Jan Stuart (08/06/2008)

"Green's first studio achievement shows he can melt into the material rather than dominate it. He enforces a flow to the dialogue that gives it an adorable silliness..."
Premiere - Eric Kohn (08/06/2008)

4 stars out of 5 -- "PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is the perfect companion-piece to SUPERBAD....The chemistry between Rogen and Franco is effortless..."
Empire - Olly Richards (10/01/2008)

"PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is a raucous, ribald mission comedy....As a stoner movie, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is a success..."
Sight and Sound - Ben Walters (11/01/2008)

"Fanboy wish-fulfillment, half-baked Beckettian verbal play, and endearingly unguarded bromance are smoothly blended in this David Gordon Green joint..."
Film Comment - Paul Brunick (11/01/2008)

"PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is a drug-fueled caper that doesn't stint on chronically loopy characters and ridiculously funny situations."
Hollywood Reporter - Michael Rechtshaffen (07/19/2008)

Dale Denton, a jaded process server and master of process server disguises, who's involved with a high schooler Angie (Amber Heard) in a borderline statutory romance, while in a more obsessive pursuit of the ultimate high.Denton believes he's found his proverbial dream bag of weed when goofy local pot peddler Saul (James Franco) offers him a bid on his unique exclusive quality stash of Pineapple Express.Saul whose connections to the underworld of illegal drugs inadvertently make them witnesses to murder. It's the classic tale of marijuana dealer meets boy, boy meets marijuana dealer and over the river and through the woods into a drug dealer's hideout with guns they go. Saul & Dale's Trip leads them to form a friendship, moreover a pact to stick together as they find ways to escape Ted Jones (Gary Cole), a notoriously violent drug lord who's out for their blood. With Ted hot on their heels, eager to cover up his murderous tracks, Dale and Saul perpetually find themselves on the run. The result is a series of paranoia-induced mishaps wherein they get stoned in the wilderness, abandon their car, capture and duck-tape one of Ted's rats (Danny McBride), get arrested at an elementary school playground, steal a police car and shoot-up an illegal storage facility housing thousands of grams of their favorite substance. While the action rarely stops and the comedic moments in between run from from slap-stick to just plain silly, the film's metaphor for drug use is apparent: while crazy things happen to Dale and Saul, in the end, nothing really happens and they remain as directionless as they were from the start, except for the bruises and criminal records they acquire.

Judd Apatow hit the jackpot with Pineapple Express. The latest movies he produced where funny but it seems that they were all the same but this one was completely different. It has lots of funny moments and situations, the jokes were great although they turn to be kinda repetitive as the movie moves along. It is full of action and adventure. The story is original, the plot is interesting and very well developed. Loved the soundtrack, the music was great. It has a very fast paced rhythm, a very good thing because the movie never turns to be tiresome to the viewer. The cast is very good, Seth Rogen was excellent with a very funny performance, James Franco was hilarious in a role completely different from what he done before, Danny McBride was a real surprise as Red and the supporting roles from Rosie Perez, Gary Cole, Kevin Corrigan and Craig Robinson were very convincing. In conclusion, Pineapple Express is a movie which only purpose is to entertain. So if you are in the mood of a simple comedy, sit down, turn your brain off, relax and enjoy.

I LOVED this movie. Too funny!!

Created: 26/01/09
I honestly think this is the hardest I've laughed in a movie. Ever. Definitely the best comedy since Wedding Crashers, and in my opinion it's much better and funnier. I'm usually not one to laugh in movies, even when I think they are good movies. Ex: thought Wedding Crashers was good but didn't really laughed, just smiled a lot. But with Pineapple Express I found myself laughing out loud through-out the whole movie. James Franco is excellent in it, even though I was weary because I wasn't crazy of his performance in the Spider-man movies. He was perfect for this. Absolutely hilarious. It runs a little long but the comedy in it really makes up for it. A must if you love comedies!
