Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Blu-ray Disc, 2007)

Gore Verbinski, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

IN THEATERS JULY 7, 2006The sequel to the 2003 blockbuster finds the crew battling Davey Jones's ghost and other assorted nautical apparitions., The second part of a trilogy, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST is a fantastic tale of pirates, love, and the supernatural. Blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and his upper-class love Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are preparing to wed when they are confronted with a warrant for their arrests because they helped the notorious pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) escape the authorities. Their only choice for a pardon is to find Jack and return to Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) with the flamboyant captain's compass. Will's attempt to track Jack down, however, becomes an adventure unto itself: Jack is being held captive on an island where the natives think he is a god. To make matters worse, the infamous Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and his Flying Dutchman crew are after Jack, seeking his soul to repay a debt. With his beard of tentacles and a lobster claw for a hand, heartless Jones is no mere mortal. He and his men are slowly evolving, taking on the attributes of various sea creatures, and with the help of a giant sea monster, the Kraken, they rule the waters.Seeking respite from his fate with Davy Jones, Jack enlists the aid of Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), a practitioner of the supernatural, in an effort to locate the Dead Man's Chest that supposedly contains Jones's still-beating heart. Whoever possesses the heart controls Jones, and thereby controls the seas. And so the adventure continues as Jack, Will, and the Black Pearl crew track down the Flying Dutchman in search of redemption. This rollicking summer adventure, directed by Gore Verbinski (THE WEATHER MAN, THE RING), features multiple intersecting storylines, unique stunts, and a pithy script that lets each main character shine, while the costumes and makeup for Jones and his sea creature crew are nothing short of spectacular.

Editorial reviews

"Gore Verbinski, the director, has an appropriate sense of mischief, as well as a gift, nearly equaling those of Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg, for integrating CGI seamlessly into his cinematic compositions."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (07/07/2006)

3 stars out of 5 -- "[Depp's] Sparrow is even more engaging than he was three years ago..."
Total Film - Jonathan Dean (08/01/2006)

3 stars out of 4 -- "Johnny Depp is back in prime form as Capt. Jack Sparrow, the most subversive hero ever in a Disney movie....You can't take your eyes off him."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (08/10/2006)

"Depp is mostly great here, too, playing for laughs, which he easily gets, but also hinting more than previously at a sinister, less whimsical side to Jack."
Sight and Sound - Allan Jones (09/01/2006)

"[An] unstoppable sequel....As Jones returns from the deep to claim his deadly debt, our plucky heroes try to avoid being sent to a watery grave."
Ultimate DVD - Chris Prince (08/01/2006)

"[The] two-and-a-half-hour extravaganza entangles the three protagonists' lives again and offers everything from a grand bar brawl to a three-way sword fight on a spinning wheel to the attack of a ship-swallowing Kraken."
Premiere - Premiere Staff (12/01/2006)

Dead Man's Chest

Created: 20/04/07
I think the word 'wow' pretty much sums up this movie. It was excellent! It definitely meets the standards set by the first movie.

This movie starts off on Will Turner's and Elizabeth Swann's wedding day, but the wedding is cancelled because of warrants for Will's and Elizabeth's arrests for helping Captain Jack Sparrow escape. Will is allowed to go out looking for Jack Sparrow to retrieve something from him (his compass) in exchange for his and Elizabeth's freedom. Will obviously runs into problems once he finds Jack. We find out that Jack has a debt to pay to Davy Jones, which he sends Will to settle for him and to find the key to the Dead Man's Chest which contains the heart of Davy Jones, the reason Will goes along with it is because Jack promises to give him his compass in return for finding the key. Once Davy's heart has been stabbed he is killed and all people (in this case mostly dead people) are freed from their debts to him. That is the shortened version, but there is still a lot more to this film. There are a great deal of hilarious parts in this movie as well, it will definitely keep you laughing.

The only bad part of this movie is that it ends with a cliffhanger. But it is very very entertaining.

If you are a fan of the first movie, or of Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom then you will love this movie!

GREAT COLOR GREAT MOVIE

Created: 01/06/10
Being a fan of the 2 of the 3 movies- the third I felt lagging somewhat in form, I already had the first and third on Blu-ray and so it was only a matter of time before I needed the 2nd one to complete my POTC blu collection.
The color is so vibrant and the ocean scenes so awesome.
People who have not climbed aboard the blu-ray train yet need to get a ticket now and realize that colors are just incredible!! You do need an LCD TV tho to see the great diffrence!! Im slowly replacing some of my favorite films to blu-ray, although older films like some done in the 60's and 70's I will not convert to, I just dont see there being a way to enhance the film on blu ray with the quality of the original film. There are some blu rays like Predator which due to quality of the original film transfer even enhanced the arrival of the character "dutch" form the chopper has a grainy left over that the original film had in it as well.
The newer movies are great, in fact the Avatar movie is incredible!!

A Great Sequel to an Already Great Saga

Created: 03/06/09
The second in it's trilogy dips into the water of weirdness a little bit more. As if the whole "dead by night" thing wasn't enough in the first, Dead Man's Chest really gets things going - almost to the point where I'm too focused on trying to connect the plot dots during the action scenes I should be enjoying. Remarkably, there's some very clever and funny scenes throughout the film - fantastic situations of irony and choreographed sword fighting.

Dead Man's Best

Created: 06/08/08
Fun flick, possibly the best of the three films. The only thing that compares is the dead crew from the first film.... but the dead crew from this film are just as imaginative (if not quite as spooky). There is plenty of special effects fun and amazing spectacles enough to keep the three year old in all of us transfixed. Blu ray the way to go on this one - great detail.

2nd Movie of the Series!!

Created: 07/06/08
This is the 2nd movie of the series. In this movie our favorite witty pirate Capt. Jack Sparrow is out again for his taste of immortality and there is a new enemy to be seen, Davy Jones!! Lots of action/adventure and comedy for the whole family to see. Definately a must own series!
