In a follow-up to his riveting book The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies, Imagineer Jason Surrell gives his same in-depth, behind-the-scenes treatment to another favorite Disney attraction in Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies. This is a must-read book for all fans of the Disney theme parks and especially of the Pirates attraction.
Surrell gives a history of the development of the attraction, going into detail about the contributions of various Imagineers to the creation of an attraction unlike any other. He also compares each park's version of Pirates and discusses the reasons for changing or duplicating certain features. Superb photographs and concept paintings make this a great book for casually perusing or reading the whole way through. It doesn't take long to read, either, and once you get started, you won't want to put it down. This book is a treasure trove of information for everyone interested in Imagineering, design, and Disney.
Also, Surrell includes a chapter about the transformation of Pirates of the Caribbean from popular attraction to blockbuster film (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl). An updated edition with information about the second movie, Dead Man's Chest, and about the film-related revisions to the attraction is expected soon. (Recently, several characters from the movies, including Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, have been added to the attractions.)
Jason Surrell's love of Imagineering and WDI/WED's history is evident in his books, and it's contagious. I highly recommend Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies and Surrell's Haunted Mansion book, and I'm anticipating his forthcoming Disney Mountains: Imagineering At Its Peak.
