The Polar Express (DVD, 2005, Widescreen)

Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks, Michael Jeter|Theatrical release: 2004 | Rating: G (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Director Robert Zemeckis revolutionized the art of animated film in 1998's WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT by dropping cartoon characters into the same frame with flesh-and-blood actors. In THE POLAR EXPRESS, live action and animation have merged seamlessly, resulting in sparkling super-realism. A landmark technique Zemeckis and his Sony Pictures Imageworks team call "Performance Capture" perfectly suits the tenor of this wondrous children's Christmas story by Chris Van Allsburg. A disillusioned little boy, just old enough to doubt the existence of Santa Claus, has the adventure of a lifetime one fateful Christmas Eve. Clad in his pajamas, he climbs aboard a magic train to the North Pole, driven by a kindly train conductor (voiced by Tom Hanks who starred in both of Zemeckis's Academy-Award winning films FORREST GUMP and CASTAWAY). Among myriad jaw-dropping moments, the train plummets brakeless through crystalline mountains in a simulated roller coaster ride. Going off the rails, skidding sideways, and snaking violently across a frozen lake, the train arrives at the North Pole (a vast, glowing city of brick buildings). At that moment, the car carrying the kids detaches and they're sent tumbling down never-ending chutes and slides until they land in the middle of Santa's Workshop. With its fascinating tale and impressive technical frolics, THE POLAR EXPRESS is destined to become both a holiday classic and a new turning point in the art of animated cinema.

Didn't like this one!

I am surprised by all the rave reviews this movie got. I did not like it at all. First of all, I enjoyed the simple book and the "magic" of Christmas. This movie shouldn't even be called "The Polar Express," because it wasn't simple or magical. It is VERY LOOSELY BASED on the book, which, in my mind, is a shame.

All of the time spent on top of the train never happened in the book and, frankly, was a little scary. We watched this before going on a real train and my son wondered if he would have to get on top of the train, or if someone would be walking on it the whole time!!! The hobo on top of the train was especially disturbing, and when he "broke up" as they went into the tunnel, it seemed as if he was hit. Tom Hanks made this character creepy!

As for Hanks's work on the other characters, I thought it was a bit overdone, and the kid characters were annoying. The movements were strange and so were their voices. The storyline was choppy and uninteresting. The ride was scary and fast. etc...

Overall, I think it was bad. It was both uninteresting and drawn out, overdone character acting by Tom Hanks and un-magical. Watching once was plenty for our family.

A new Christmas Classic!

Created: 09/11/07
We all love to watch our classic Christmas shows. You can add this one to the shows you'll make sure your children and grandchildren see every year. A wonderful story about a boy who is starting to 'grow out' of Christmas and no longer believe in the magic of Christmas. He discovers along the Polar Express to the North Pole about Christmas and the thruth about Santa Clause.

A very cute story that every child should experience!

This is truly a great movie. The effects are fantastic, so much so, that it looks very realistic and not at all like an 'animated' movie. My kids love to watch it often. Tom Hanks is magnificent in the roles of the young boy, the hobo, Santa Claus, the dad, and of course... the conductor. I give this movie two thumbs up, 5 stars, an A+ and any other high rating I've missed.

stunning

This movie was absolutely stunning. The scenery, the characters and the animation are breathtaking. If you're a fan of 3D animated movies, watch it purely for the attention to detail.

The story follows a boy who doesn't believe in christmas, but off course, by the end of the film he has every reason to believe.

Tom Hanks does an amazing job and brings the many characters he voices to life. For some of the children, their voices don't fit aswell, but it doesn't take too much away from the film.

I cannot even begin to explain how well animated this film is! It really is worth watching, just make sure parents are at hand for young children as there are some scenes that may not be suitable for young children to watch alone. It's a great film that my family and I all enjoyed.

BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE. This is a great movie to watch with the whole family. It will keep the kids attention and also the adults. Tom hanks plays all the adult characters' voices and is awesome. The characters are cartoons yet to at all cartoony, it is computer animation at its best. Turn on the stereo and let the great sound effects, such as the train on the tracks, the songs at the end fill up your living room. You can't go wrong giving this to anyone, not religious, not full of morality and christmas cheer, just a good old fashioned story about why we should not forget the meaning of christmas as adults or children,.
