    Product description

    Synopsis
One of the three most important figures (the others being Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler) in the development of hard-boiled and noir fiction, James M. Cain was perhaps best known for a radical mixture of sex and violence that remains blunt and shocking years after the original publication of these works in the 1930s and 1940s. This anthology collects three of Cain's best-known works (all made into successful movies), along with five short stories.

    Industry Reviews
"Cain has developed the hard-boiled manner as a perfect instrument of narration....Cain is an old newspaper man who learned his reporting well, so well that he makes Hemingway look like a lexicographer....In the broadest sense he is no asset to American literature, for he adds nothing in breadth, but only in intensity, to our consciousness of life. But we want to see more of his work."
New York Times Book Review - Harold Strauss (02/18/1934)

"[E]verything that happens in this novel happens twice, the first time with a twist, the second time with a reverse twist."
New York Times Book Review - Ross MacDonald

"Let us consider 'Postman' as an example of Cain's craftsmanship at its finest."
    Joyce Carol Oates

    "A good, swift, violent story."
    Dashiell Hammett

'The Postman Always Rings Twice' is so continuously exciting that if you can put it down before you've finished it, you are not the reader I think you are....I can't detect a stylistic flaw in the book."
New York Herald Tribune Book Review - Franklin P. Adams (02/18/1934)

    A Noir Murder Classic

    Created: 14/08/06
Sometimes those oldsters who say, “They just don’t make things the way they used to” are absolutely right. James Cain’s classic suspense story is a case in point. All of this dark, steamy novel’s characters may be fueled by lust, selfishness, and violence, but Cain’s spare prose sketches their mixed motives with such blurry deftness that his readers sit on edge, not quite knowing what is happening or whom, if anyone, they can trust, until the very last words of the novel. And only afterwards might they notice that Cain held them in complete thrall without any of the gratuitous sex and large-scale violence that characterize today’s murder thrillers. Stanley Tucci’s straightforward, low-key performance as narrator gives nothing away, so that Cain’s “Postman” can truly deliver.

This is a REALLY cool fun fast paced story that is made even better by a great audio book play. I listened to this in my car while driving to work and then home. I found myself ignoring business calls (girlfriend calls too!), waiting a little longer at red lights, and driving just a bit slower than normal just so that I could keep on listening to the book. I hated for the book to be over. This is one of the few that can/will be listened to again!
