    Movie synopsis

Pretty but poor, Andie's (Molly Ringwald) a good student who develops a crush on Blane (Andrew McCarthy), the sensitive, well-born preppie. But Blane runs with a fast crowd of haughty rich kids, the kind of clique Andie and her new wavy best friend Duckie (Jon Cryer) can't stand. Going against her fretting father (Harry Dean Stanton), peer pressure and social expectations, she decides to date him. But their big plans for the senior prom ultimately fall apart when Blane heeds his friend Steff's (James Spader) warning to "quit slumming." Will Blane find the courage to claim what he really wants and give up the so-called friends he doesn't need? This classic 1980s teen film from the master of the genre, writer-producer John Hughes features plenty of great '80s pop tunes from the Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths, Echo and The Bunnymen, New Order, and more. The continued success of Hughes' films and actors ushered in the era of the "brat pack" and teen films as pop culture.

    Ahh..the eighties

    Created: 01/04/06
This is a film that truly defines the era. It has the classic 80's soundtrack (OMD, The Smiths, New Order), the eighties fashion (just look at Jon Cryer's tousled do, and of course that hideous pink prom dress that Molly Ringwald wore - it could only be from the 80's!) and last but not the least, the classic 80's leading actors: Andrew Mc Carthy, Molly Ringwald and James Spader.

This is also a film that began the teen movie genre - Pretty in Pink was THE teen movie. Every element is there - a great young cast, a coming of age romance story and the era defining soundtrack.

As for the plot - it's a classic love triangle story, that also mixes in the usual rich boy-poor girl aspect. Poor girl meets rich boy, rich boy falls in love with poor girl - who also has a boy who's in love with her that turns out to be her best friend. It's cliche, but who cares! It's entertaining, the actors are great - special mention to Jon Cryer who gives out the most endearing performance of a lovesick best friend.

Though getting a DVD copy with extras - especially if they had gotten the original ending for it - would have been excellent, this film being an 80's classic would be as good a reason to get a copy of this movie too.

    Ah, the 80's!

    Created: 05/09/06
A bitter sweet tale about a good girl living on the poor side of town. Typical 80's storytelling, reminds me of my highschool days. Molly Ringwald is really good at playing the uptight, intelligent withdrawn type, and Andrew McCarthy is a sweet love interest. Loved the clothes, the music, the story, still after all these years! Duckie is hilarious, everyone has known this character in their lives at least once. This is a must have for all folks wanting to collect 80's cult movies, especially involving the famous "Brat Pack".

A classic 80s high-school coming-of-age story starring the girl of the times, Molly Ringwald. Highly recommended for any tween girl. The movie may be old, but the problems experienced in high-school never really change.
