Great Movie!
A story of a young man and woman meeting during the destructive conflict between industrial and natural worlds. The forests contain spirits and intelligent animals whose painful perspective is told to the only two humans who care to listen -- Ashitaka and San.
A beast maddened by a bullet wound from the nature-consuming Iron Mountain attacks Ashitaka's village. While defending his home, he is touched by the beast, marked with its infectious hatred and must leave in search for a cure before it consumes him as well.
On this journey away from home, Ashitaka encounters a world much like our own today; saturated with fear, greed, anger, and an ignorance to the wonderful beauty of our connection to nature. He meets a girl, San, who fights alongside ancient animals against the people of Iron Mountain who are destroying the forest. Ashitaka and San's approach to ending this conflict clash; a peaceful solution versus violent solution.
Can Ashitaka's attempts to convince Iron Mountain that they are killing themselves by attacking the forest end the war? Can he release San from her blinding hatred of humans? Will the spirit of the forest and life itself be consumed by this maliciousness from both sides? Look "with eyes unclouded by hate" and you will see the truth.

Princess Mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki is a great animator, and this is a great film. Do not allow conventional thoughts about animation to prevent you from seeing it. It tells an epic story set in medieval Japan, at the dawn of the Iron Age, when some men still lived in harmony with nature and others were trying to tame and defeat it. It is not a simplistic tale of good and evil, but the story of how humans, forest animals and nature gods all fight for their share of the new emerging order.
It is one of the most visually inventive films I have ever seen...
The artistry is masterful...examples...
The writhing skin of the boar-monster is an extraordinary sight...
The great white wolves are drawn with grace, and not sentimentalized; when they bare their fangs, you can see that they are not friendly comic pals, but animals who can and will kill...

This is one of my most favorite movies. Studio Ghibli is by far one of the best animation studios out there. Every movie of theirs I own or have seen is spellbinding. Princess Mononoke captures my sense of adventure and makes me wish I lived in such a time and place. A good way to escape the mundane day to day world, and make you appreciate nature at the same time. My daughter really likes My Neighbor Totoro and Ponyo, both I would recommend to anyone. Totoro more for the kids and Ponyo for everyone. Princess Mononoke may not be suitable for the younger audience, is kinda violent in parts and scary, but the story is so excellent. Love it!

Princess Mononoke (American)

I have owned two copies of this film, the first of which was in Japanese and has gone missing. I will note that I have studied Japanese and lived in Japan. In my opinion, this is one of the best animated films ever made. The tight story and stunning artwork combine to form an incredibly compelling depiction of Japanese society both historically and contemporarily. This film is an examination of humanity as a whole, and it critiques a civilizational fixation with technological advancement at the expense of natural order quite effectively. The downside to the American version is the characterization. The choice of actors, all of whom a talented, does not suit the characters often. The impact of the film is affected. Overall, I give the original an easy A+, but consider the American effort a hard B.

This was a trippy movie. Very exciting! Definitely interesting. Movie is about man's war on nature and it's resources and nature fighting back. There are huge animals "Gods" it was funny that they made a comment saying that when they get angry they grow stupid and are in man's control, which made me think of this as maybe a story about how prehistoric animals were domesticated. Just a thought anyways. Really loved the movie lots of color. Definitely graphic and violent for an adult generation, definitely not for children. Really loved this odd movie. Props to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli!
