Lurching out of the speakers with aggressive bottom-heavy rock, PURPLE is an example of what brought guitar-oriented rock back into the spotlight in the nineties. The 5 songs are driving, stripped to the basics of guitar, bass, and drums. PURPLE exemplifies straight ahead rock.Embracing styles from grunge to late-1960s hard rock, Stone Temple Pilots are a band accomplished at writing abrasive rock songs, but aren't afraid of quieter acoustic melodies. The album starts with the menacing "Meat Plow," with the lyrics, "Fine place for a day full of breakdowns," leaving the listener to wonder if PURPLE is an analogy to a bruise. But as the bruise begins to fade, so does STP's over-wrought aggression. "Interstate Love Song" shows their sensitive side both lyrically and musically, and Scott Weiland's vocals are pushed beyond his hard rock growl into a near-sensitive croon. What makes Stone Temple Pilots click is their ability to write basic, riff-heavy guitar rock. PURPLE finds Stone Temple Pilots comfortable in their hard-rock medium, but also willing to take the chance on their softer side.

Editorial Reviews
3 - Average - ...Stone Temple Pilots throw every influence from Traffic to Hawkwind in the pot and finally come up with something good...
NME

...Stone Temple Pilot's clumsiness is itself a sign of life, a sign that there's still more weird energy in heaven and Earth than is dreamt of in Punk Rock 101...
Spin (19940701)

3 Stars - Good - ...[Stone Temple Pilots] play arena rock in the tradition of long hair and pot smoke. There is nothing grungy or alternative about STP's palatable suburban riffs...

Purple - One of the Best!

Created: 02/11/06
If you like STP, then you should have this in your collection. A fine blending of vocals, guitar and drums. I don't get tired of listening to it. There is more to STP than Interstate Love Song. Silvergun Superman, Still Remains and Pretty Penny are three songs far from any classic rock radio station's play list. And thats too bad because they are great tunes laden with some of rock's best riffs. Lastly Eric Kretz' drum sound is fabulous throughout the entire recording!

My favorite STP album by far!

Created: 12/09/07
What a follow-up! This one shows them playing and writing with more maturity and has a good balance between heavy and soft throughout. "Vasoline" was a tremendous hit for them. It is very edgy and reminds me somewhat of skate-punk. Don't ask me why. "Interstate Love Song" shows some of the aforementioned maturity and is my all-time favorite STP song. Everything about it is great. That's about as much as I can elaborate. Just listen to it yourself so you can get your own impression. "Army Ants" is another edgy song and the opening reminds me of something that Joe Satriani would do. Again, don't ask me why. Last but not least, there is a hilarious bonus track which is on a few minutes after the last song. It reminds me of Monty Python. I think they mixed up the titles on this album. The BONUS track should have been called "Lounge Fly." Anyway, if you're into alterative and don't have this one yet, get it. It's a classic.

Lounge Fly

This is STP's best album but that doesn't mean it's great. I remember buying it when it first came out and being blown away. I had it for a couple years until my whole CD collection was stolen and then I forgot about it. I recently found it again and decided to give it another listen. It didn't hold up to my expectations. All too often it reminds me of the MTV garbage modern rock that I can't get away from. Sure, it's a bit more rough and grungy but it still has that I wanna buy a big SUV and run you off the road kind of feel to it. 2 Stars.

A little softer than previous release

Created: 15/11/07
Stone Temple Pilots's previous album Core was a hard, solid headbanger that didnt have the intensity of metal. This got a little softer, but they still kept it through. Like their last album, I recommend this album to any STP fan, you'll like it. Look at its sales; it went 6x platinum. Still, though, I wish it was a little harder than this.
