    Album Notes
Queens Of The Stone Age includes: Joshua Homme (vocals, guitar); Dave Catching (lap steel guitar, electric piano); Scott Mayo, Fernando Pullum, Reggie Young (horns); Barrett Martin (vibraphone, steel drum); Nick Oliveri (bass, background vocals); Nick Lucero, Gene Trautmann (drums); Alfredo Hernandez (percussion); Nick Eldorado, Wendy Ray Moan, Rob Halford, Mark Lanegan, Mike Johnson, Pete Stahl (background vocals).Recorded at Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, California from December 1999 to February 2000.Personnel: Chris Goss (vocals, guitar); Fred Drake (vocals, tamboura); Alfredo Hernandez (tamboura); Dave Catching (percussion).Audio Mixer: Joe Barresi.Recording information: Estudio Monkey, Fontada De La Palma, CA (04/03/1998-04/21/1998); Rancho De La Luna, Arbol De Joshua, CA (04/03/1998-04/21/1998).Photographer: Lisa Johnson .Instead of trying to recreate the sound of his former band Kyuss, Josh Homme took a new approach to music. He crafted tight hard rock songs that were heavy on melody and light on vocals. While there is still a lot of fuzz coming from the amplifiers, the vocals are softly interwoven among the chords. There's no screaming or rock & roll antics, and the group takes an almost lo-fi attitude to heavy metal -- an interesting combination that produced instant radio gems like "Regular John," the extreme ranges on "Avon," and the smoky, blues-influenced "Walkin' on the Sidewalks." Queens of the Stone Age are creating a new blend of heavy metal that makes it acceptable to produce creative music that doesn't rely on testosterone as the driving force. ~ David Thomas

    Editorial Reviews
[With] an array of influences as wide-reaching and sprawling as its sound.
    Kerrang

4 Stars (out of 5) - ...deriving maximum power from a sound stripped to its core elements (Homme's bone-hard riffs and mournful vocals and a juggernaut of rhythm section)...
    Q (19991201)

7 (out of 10) - ...While there's really nothing in this collection worth trading in those Melvins albums for, it's strangely compelling to hear how Homme and his cohorts killed many an afternoon in a thick THC haze with Can's TAGO MAGO, then worked it into their patented pedal abuse...
    Spin (19990101)

4 stars out of 5 -- [T]hey'd never again groove like this, with gurgling Teutonic drones swallowing Stooges chords and intercepted radio cross talk.
    Rolling Stone

4 stars out of 5 -- [With] a belief in timeless, classic riffs and also more toothsome and unswinging structures...
    Uncut

3 stars out of 5 -- Queens Of The Stone Age were edgy, sarcastic and perfect for rock and metal audiences sick of Korn and Disturbed.

    The Queens Rock!!!

    Created: 05/12/06
I'm a big Queens Of The Stone Age fan and this was the only CD missing from my Queens... catalog. I think they have a very unique sound in this album. There's catchy riffs with cool guitar solos. This album was ahead of its time. Thank you Josh Home for leaving Kyuss.

    Classic QOTSA

    Created: 19/03/09
This album is great, you can definitely see how it all got started and how QOTSA has grown over their career. My faves include Avon and You Would Know. Both are great tracks that have those great guitar riffs that vibrate through you. All in all, its a great CD to own. That is if you're lucky enough to catch one of them since so few were produced!!!

Queens of the Stone Age self-titled album

    Created: 02/06/06
If you're a fan, get it. The entire album is great, but especially "Avon", "You Would Know", and "Mexicola". Something in the vein of Songs for the Deaf, but mellower, sludgier. Better than Rated R and Lullabies to Paralyze, but nothing can top Songs for the Deaf.

    Best Rock album in 1998.

    Created: 05/11/09
This CD is amazing. Honestly, I think that this CD is the best rock album that came out in 1998.
The best way I can describe the music is harmonic, fuzzy, heavy, pretty and melodic all at the same time.
Im not a huge QOTSA fan, but this album is good. The only way to understand is to listen. so go out and search because its out of print.
