Race to Witch Mountain (DVD, 2009)

Andy Fickman, The Rock, AnnaSophia Robb|Theatrical release: 2009 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson (aka "The Rock") makes family-friendly fare with director Andy Fickman’s (THE GAME PLAN) sci-fi adventure, RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN. Johnson plays Jack Bruno, a surly former felon who is trying to stay out of trouble by driving a cab in Las Vegas and who embarks upon the adventure of a lifetime when two teens appear in his taxi and need a ride to (seemingly) the middle of nowhere. He quickly realizes that the mysterious siblings, Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig), are far from average--especially when they are pursued by a villain wearing a high-tech suit of armor. With the help of Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino), the trio travels to Witch Mountain, a secret government outpost in the Nevada desert, with the hopes of evading their pursuers and sending Sara and Seth home--and saving Earth in the process. This latest installment in the Witch Mountain series comes more than 30 years after the release of the first two films, ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN and RETURN FROM WITCH MOUNTAIN. Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, who played siblings Tia and Tony in the original films, appear in small but pivotal roles as a waitress and a sheriff. Johnson makes Bruno likable, even though the character barely likes himself. Robb and Ludwig are well cast as the earnest siblings who hold the fate of the world in their hands. Chase scenes abound and special effects that highlight the teens’ special powers are prevalent, but the film remains kid-friendly. Cheech Marin and Garry Marshall make brief cameo appearances.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"What Johnson does here is provide a credible tough guy action hero in a non-threatening mode. He rules over chases, fights, explosions and an Ooze monster, yet never seems nasty, so the kids can feel safe around him."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (03/11/2009)

"It plays, in fact, like a sci-fi action adventure that genre fans of all ages will recognize as such....More importantly, it's entertaining with a crafty mixture of action, humor and drama."
Hollywood Reporter - Kirk Honeycutt (03/11/2009)

"Robb is exceptional as Sara, delivering the stilted alien-speak lines as if she's been talking that way her entire life. And the chemistry between Robb and Johnson is just short of terrific -- you know Jack would protect Sara with his life and not because he has to."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (03/13/2009)

"Johnson is one of showbiz's most engaging leading men....[He] is a sly delight in RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN..."
Washington Post - Jan Stuart (03/13/2009)

"[A] full-throttle crowd-pleaser....RACE justifies its title by coming off as much more of a high-velocity action-adventure than its predecessors."
Variety - Joe Leydon (03/11/2009)

Great for keeping kids busy

Created: 11/08/09
Geared toward a younger audience certainly so when they say it's a great family movie, they mean it's appropriate for kids and adults can spend the time catching up on extra work, folding laundry, cooking, reading e-mail......

It has your basic aliens are here and the government wants them plot and there are some very cool effects. One of the coolest moments in the whole movie is already shown in the trailer aka boy stops vehicle with his body. That did make me stop and go "whoa."

Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock stars as Jack Burno, ex-con/taxi driver who is aiding AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig, alien siblings get back to their spaceship so they can go home. AnnaSophia Robb does a great job emoting with her giant eyes that pulled so much focus for her in Bridge to Terabithia. Alexander Ludwig is more of a newcomer to big movies and his inexperience does shine through a bit when he has more lines instead of just reacting to his sister. The Rock continues to show us his charismatic nature, a sense of humor and timing, and mainly an ability to beat people up when the situation calls for it.

Also featured in the movie is Carla Gugino as Dr. Friedman, an astro physicist who helps the group in the final leg of their journey. I very much enjoyed her work in Sin City and she was one of the characters I liked most in Watchmen, both very much ensemble movies in which she shown brightly. In this movie, she is mostly there for an adult female counterpart to balance out the cast but there is no denying her enthusiasm. She dives in to this role just as hard as she has committed to roles in the past and doesn't let the type of movie dictate her level of performance. I appreciate that and give her mad props for the effort.

There are a handful of plot holes, but nothing a kid would ever notice so I think the movie did its job. It's great for one viewing, particularly if you are babysitting and need some entertainment for to distract little people running around your place. Just average.

I guess I knew I was always going to be disappointed regardless because I was a fan of the original 1975 movie that my parents showed me. It was the same when Charlie and the Chocolate Factory came out. Yeah, it's a remake of the original instead of Race's completely different story version of the idea of Escape to Witch Mountain, but I'll always have a fondness for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory from 1971. Way before I was born and yeah, I fast forward the Cheer up Charlie song sometimes because I like finding the tickets and touring the factory but the sheer emotion from Gene Wilder in the final scenes is a lesson in monologue right before your eyes. It's beautiful and I find notice new things about his performance every time I watch.

Good entertainment from a trusted movie company

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson (Get Smart & The Game Plan) stars in this Disney movie about a taxi driver who unwillingly picks up two space travelers played by AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia) and Alexander Ludwig (The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising).

Robb and Alex have come to earth to retrieve an experiment their father was working on to help save their home planet.

When the government of the US detects the Aliens they use all of their resources to track them down to discover the secret of their origin and their unearthly powers. All the time the trio is also being pursued by a warrior from their home planet who was sent to insure their failure.

This movie is a typical Disney film in that it has a lot of special effects but a great story line. The actors all play their roles well and the scenes all connect to make a very entertaining movie.

Rated 5 of 5 for good acting and a very good overall movie.

This movie is highly recommended and it would be good for the entire family to sit and watch together.

An Excellent Movie

Created: 18/12/09
This movie is a lot better than the others. It has a lot of action and is clean. So it's safe to let the kids watch and it has enough action to keep a teenager/adult entertained at the same time. Dwayne Johnson (the Rock) does an excellent job acting. I would definatly recommend that you watch this movie. You will probably really like this movie, no matter how old you are. You probably won't regret buying this movie.

Summary:
Fasten your seatbelts for the thrill ride of your life in Disney's fun family action-adventure "Race To Witch Mountain", starring Dwayne Johnson. Jack Bruno (Johnson), a Las Vegas cabdriver struggling to stay on the right path, gets an out-of-this-world incentive when two aliens, disguised as teenagers, suddenly appear in his taxi. In a race against government agents, an alien hunter and time itself, Jack must help the children recover their lost spaceship so they can return home and save their planet and ours. Breathtaking chases, close calls and special effects make this an action-adventure the whole family will enjoy.

Excellent Remake of the original movies................

Created: 24/12/10
Dwayne Johnson plays the main character in this remake of the original movie series. He plays a cab driver who picks up two kids but finds out they are more than they seem. The boy can go through walls and objects while the girl can elevate objects and control them. They are being chased by not just the military but an alien who wants them killed! Dwayne Johnson asks help from a scientist who then together helps the kids to their ship. The story is about one alien race trying to help another from its destruction but still having the same problems like us, Greedy military people! The kids need to escape back to their world to inform that humanity is not the enemy and the people are good.

This movie has plenty of comedy, action, and adventure. Mild Violence. Great story. Only down side is the one disc version has no extras! Special features only talks about what is a Blue-Ray movie and player. Thats it. I bought the one disc version for about $6.00! Don't buy this version for over $10 bucks.

Great movie, must have.
