A mix of live cuts and new studio tracks, the album finds U2 running wild in the aftermath of The Joshua Tree, continuing their embrace of America to the point that they adopt several classic rock moves. Specifically, they dabble in American roots rock, something they ignored before. These experiments sometimes work: "Desire" has an intoxicating Bo Diddley beat, "Angel of Harlem" is a punchy, sunny Stax soul tribute, "When Loves Come to Town" is an endearingly awkward blues duet with B.B. King, and the Dylan collaboration "Love Rescue Me" is an overlooked minor bluesy gem. These are paired with some affecting laments -- the cascading "All I Want Is You" and "Heartland," which sounds like a Joshua Tree outtake -- but Rattle and Hum is by far the least-focused record U2 ever made, leaving it to the listener to mine for the Silver & Gold within its sprawl. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Excellent, one of the best CD's ever made

Created: 10/04/06
This album is simply one of the best U2 ever wrote, aswell as Achtung Baby.

The song 'desire' is a raw adrenaline rush of music with rough tones and exceptional guitars and drums.

'All I want is u' is a beautiful ballad that Bono wrote and one of the most relaxing and inspiring love songs mixed together, like a crying teenager pouring his heart out, only to get ripped apart by life.

'Pride' is a tribute to the fall of apartheid, and is one of the most moving songs I've ever heard, the acoustics are sensational, and the melody is entrancing, but like all U2 songs, the lyrics and the ability to make love to the music is what the band excel in, sounding like they are playing their souls on their instruments.

'Angel of Harlem' is an urban night song, which brings to life a dark void of his personality that you would swear was written while Bono was high on something. Its simply breathtaking, sounding like a very metallic melody with a coarse undertone that reverberates throughout the whole song. Very very inspiring song.

All in all, one of their best, if only 2nd to their greatest CD Achtung Baby.

A chance to see the "real" guys that make up U2

Created: 08/09/06
This album was not only a great mix of music that is classic U2, but it is also a glimpse inside the minds of the men who made the music. It's a chance to see that these 4 guys from Dublin are, indeed, human. You see the differences in their personalities and their musical likings (a precursor to their all-to-close-call with calling it quits before sticking it out to release Achtung Baby).
The music is a mix of new stuff, old stuff, live stuff and studio stuff. They have some great help on some of the recordings from some known and lesser-known people. "Still haven't found what I'm looking for" was backed by a gospel choir in NYC and "When love comes to town" was recorded with the blues man himself, BB King (including some pretty high compliments from King, regarding Bono's lyric writing abilities).
This album, recorded during their "Joshua Tree" tour, shows the growth that brought about the new U2 sound. This tour introduced them to the music that would eventually change their whole view of recording. The DVD/Video of the same name includes even more looks behind the scenes and is worth the price if you are a U2 fan. Check it out here on ebay. All in all, a truly great album with some of the deepest, meaningful music and lyrics released by U2 to date. And the look inside is a real bonus.

Rattle & hum

Created: 17/11/09
one of there best albums u got to love u2 .u2 certainly holds its own while flirting with the greats, but Rattle and Hum is most enjoyable when the band relaxes and allows itself to stretch without self-consciously reaching for the stars. The New Voices of Freedom choir joins the band onstage in New York for an electrifying gospel-style rendition of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" that finds new depths in a song that was gripping the first time around.

Rattle and Hum (music CD vs DVD Video)

Created: 21/03/10
the album is good but the DVD video is noticeably a better buy...

first off you get to see guitarist "Edge" do his stuff...
focused and to the point (the man is just plain awesome).

second - there are some renditions on the video NOT on the album
and that keenly makes for a big difference...
There are brief add-in endings to the songs not on the original music CD
(Gloria, Sympathy For the Devil and ruby Tuesday).

And Sunday Bloody Sunday leads one to believe that Bono/U2 is just plain
sick and tired of war and killing...
(again "the Edge" Dave Evans delivers awesome and tireless machine gun chops)

and last - the DVD video is for all purposes as good (fidelity wise)
as the music CD

Mixin' it up

Created: 11/11/06
U2 mixes it up with blues ("When Love Comes To Town") and I just die happy. I wasn't too crazy about all the songs on this CD, but the fantastic ones make up for them (such as "Helter Skelter") Plus, considering it's got songs that were recorded live, you can practically taste the energy.
