    Synopsis
In Ronald Reagan's own words, these diary entries provide an up-close and personal account of how the 40th president viewed his daily life, public and private. His love of his wife, Nancy; his relations with world leaders; his acerbic view of the press; and his encounters with everyday Americans comprise this record of the thoughts of "the great communicator," as he was called, and the three thousand days that made history. Historian David Brinkley assembled these entries and provides commentary.

    Publisher's Note

During his two terms as the fortieth president of the United States, Ronald Reagan kept a daily diary in which he recorded, by hand, his innermost thoughts and observations on the extraordinary, the historic, and the routine day-to-day occurrences of his presidency. Now, nearly two decades after he left office, this remarkable record—the only daily presidential diary in American history—is available for the first time.

Brought together in one volume and edited by historian Douglas Brinkley, The Reagan Diaries provides a striking insight into one of this nation's most important presidencies and sheds new light on the character of a true American leader. Whether he was in his White House residence study or aboard Air Force One, each night Reagan wrote about the events of his day, which often included his relationships with other world leaders Mikhail Gorbachev, Pope John Paul II, Mohammar al-Qaddafi, and Margaret Thatcher, among others, and the unforgettable moments that defined the era—from his first inauguration to the end of the Cold War, the Iran hostage crisis to John Hinckley Jr.'s assassination attempt.

The Reagan Diaries reveals more than just Reagan's political experiences: many entries are concerned with the president's private thoughts and feelings—his love and devotion for Nancy Reagan and their family, his belief in God and the power of prayer. Seldom before has the American public been given access to the unfiltered experiences and opinions of a president in his own words, from Reagan's description of near-drowning at the home of Hollywood friend Claudette Colbert to his determination to fight Fidel Castro at every turn and keep the Caribbean Sea from becoming a "Red Lake."

To read these diaries—filled with Reagan's trademark wit, sharp intelligence, and humor—is to gain a unique understanding of one of the most beloved occupants of the Oval Office in our nation's history.

    Industry Reviews
"Taken in all, [THE REAGAN DIARIES] paint a portrait of a president who was engaged by his job and had a healthy perspective on power."
    (06/04/2007)

"But what emerges above all from these entries is how sweet a man Reagan remained, despite a long life in the caustic worlds of Hollywood and politics."

Reagan Diaries a documentary record of great president

    Created: 04/09/07
The essence of Ronald Reagan may be best portrayed in his diary entry dated
Thursday, January 12, 1989, as he was leaving Andrews AFB, when he wrote,
"I puddled up when the Marine Band played 'Auld Lang Syne'".

That portrays the essential Ronald Reagan, a man who through nearly 50 years in public service, which followed a very public career as an actor, remained simply one of the most patriotic Americans of his time.

Douglas Brinkley, a great historian, has rendered a great service to the citizens of our nation and the world by giving us so much inside information
about the thinking, writing, decision-making, complexity, and yet the astounding leadership qualities of this great American.

Ronald Reagan is one of a handful of Presidents who kept a day-to-day diary/journal during the length of his presidency. From his first election
and inaugural event, to the attempted assassination in l981, the death of the 250 troops in Lebanon, the famous 'Boys of Point du Hoc' speech and memorial
on the DDay anniversary, to the famous challenge to Gorbachev and the Russian
Communist state to 'tear down this wall', Brinkley brings us not only inside the White House daily routines, but also inside the heart and mind of one of our greatest Presidents.

It is a great read and I recommend it highly.

An Opinion on The Reagan Diaries from a Democrat

    Created: 08/05/08
Whether you liked Ronald Reagan or not, this is good a look into his private thoughts that is enjoyable, thought provoking, and at time quite humorous. The book shows that he was a deeper person than his public persona demonstrated, and a more caring man than his tough guy image portrayed.
All in all, this is an educational read that is fun, and sheds light onto the times in which he lived.

    Great Book!!

    Created: 11/04/09
President Regan was a very fair president and it is so inspiring to look into his diaries and read what he did on a daily basis. Suprising to think that he was one of the only presidents to keep up on the diary idea. Great read, even for us common folk, you know, the people clinging to their guns and their religion and proud of it. One very special feature about this book is it actually has President Regan's HANDWRITING in the front and back covers. An interesting peak into history and worth every penny. I hope everyone who reads this book is inspired, Republican, Democrat, and everything in between.
