Spellbinding Religious Armeggedon !!!!
Created: 08/09/07
'The Reaping' is another very respectable studio horror; reflective of the 1970's 'The Exorcist' & 'The Omen'. The movie has artistic presentation amidst intelligence and style; laiden with ferociously-spellbinding cinematography which promotes the weight and severity of the actors and events unfolding straight out of the pages of The Bible's Revelations describing The Days of the End Of The World.
'The Reaping' provides a great deal of intensity while never becoming a standard exploitation film; quite scary due to Director Stephen Hopkins's tendency toward shooting the actors in suffocating close-ups, which engulf your viewing and force you into the scenarios. With some jittery hand-held camerawork; you can immediately feel the disorientation as events unraveling the World unfold; and with dream sequences & joltingly evil sound-effects the audience has the inability to slumber (if you think you might nap during this shocker).
The story tales of Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank), a once religious woman who lost her faith when her husband and daughter were murdered while doing Missionary Work. Now Katherine's job is debunking Miracles by finding scientific explanations for them; adamant that they are not 'Miracles'. But Katherine will soon be encountering genuine 'Acts of God' — or perhaps 'Satan' — that cannot be explained away by algorithms and textbooks.
Her path to redemption begins and ends in a southern town of 'Haven', where a series of Biblical Plagues are underway — and for which Katherine and her colleague can find no scientific explanation. Similarly portrayed by John Carpenter in 'Prince of Darkness'; the film makes a persuasive argument for spirituality and intellect as equally necessary and compatible concepts.
'The Reaping' holds even heavier-handed interest in it's formulaic presentation — while never betraying Carpenter's vision that paived it's way.
In the hands of Hopkins and 'House of Wax' writers Carey and Chad Hayes, serious theological inquiry is entrancing; with storytelling that is multi-dimensional. Filmmakers begin with details about Katherine's work that make us understand her works — (we see her clomping around in waters taking pictures, as she dismisses away seemingly baffling events).
Once the 'New Events Transpire'; plagues arise as sequences rush together over stretches of time. Dynamic horror set pieces for each of the plagues materialize. The 'Question of Faith' is expressed heavily as the events do present unexplained by Katherine. A lot of dialogue about the Existence and Nature of God arise, as Katherine begins a spiritual transformation she will need if she is to prevent; or stop; the Events Dooming 'All Time'.
To the last frame, scare and tension will not let you go. Very provocatively and enthralling performances drive this shocker through to it's mesmerizing shocking finale.

Katherine Winter is a former Catholic missionary that lost her faith on God after losing her daughter and her husband in Sudan, sacrificed by the locals that blamed them for the long drought. Presently she investigates religious phenomena with the intent of debunking them, finding a scientific cause for the event. She is invited to go to the small town of Haven, in Louisiana, where the river turned into blood after the death of a boy. After her arrival, each of one of the ten biblical plagues happens in the location dazing Katherine, who discloses the evil secret of the dwellers.
A Great Movie Worth the money i paid for. A must for your collection. Hilary Swank gives a outstanding performance...

This was an EXCELLENT TWIST OF FAITH!!
Created: 01/11/07
This movie starts as any other scary movie would. Kind of boring, trying to lead up to the real reason for all the bad things happening. It has a main character who lost her faith in God and the Bible when She lost her child while trying to help with a serious plague that attacked a country. She then makes it her mission to find the scientific reasoning to every "miracle" that happens, until she gets a call from a small town that the river has turned to blood. Her partner, who goes to church every sunday and believes in the Lord after being shot several times and lives, goes with her, and the movie plays out the 10 signs that the Bible talks about. They all are lead to believe that its a little girl who is the Devil's child who started the signs, but there is a serious twist to the story!!! I seriously loved this movie, and after it was over, took a look back into my own life, and how much I have lost some faith. I am not preaching by no means, but seriously, guys, this movie will give you goose bumps and have you re-evaluating your faith in God. This movie got 5 starts from me!!!

Even thought I saw sold a bootleg here, the matter was correct. I own this movie. It is an one time visit to the theater movie. Some I can watch two or more. The actor's did well, they had points about the bible, but not in deep detail. A woman lost her love for God, being that he child was killed. And that is how most are, not willing to give thier best to God. But anyway, she show's passion to gain another child trust. Her and her buddy set out to find out why things are happening in a small town. One believes in God and his will the other will find out in time to come.

This movie was very catchy from the begining. From the very begining you are trying to put a puzzle together in figuring out whos the good or bad people in the story. This really puts a new twist to the 10 biblical plagues. The movie is really about finding the truth, I have watched this 2 more times since buying this dvd.For me, it's one of those movies that I can't get tired of watching! If you love watching a thriller movie, you have to watch this one, you will not be dissapointed.
