Movie synopsis

Bill Maher travels to Israel, England, the Netherlands, Vatican City, and across America, speaking to people about faith and religion in the very funny documentary RELIGULOUS. Maher, a stand-up comedian who has hosted the talk shows POLITICALLY INCORRECT on ABC and REAL TIME on HBO and has written such bestsellers as DOES ANYBODY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT? and WHEN YOU RIDE ALONE, YOU RIDE WITH BIN LADEN, reaches out to religious leaders as well as regular folk on the street, discussing the existence of God and the importance of organized religion. Maher makes it clear from the start that he is not a fan of religion and does not believe in God, and he has fun skewering people who do--including Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Mormons, rabbis, priests, politicians, scientists, evangelical ministers, and even a preacher whose church is a converted truck. He also visits such places as the Holy Land Experience in Orlando, Florida, where he interviews the actor who plays Jesus in a live show there, and the Red Light District in Amsterdam, notorious for its legalized drugs and prostitution. As he has done on his television programs and in his books, Maher questions literal interpretations of the Bible, seeing it more as a collection of fairy tales. Director Larry Charles (BORAT, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM) intersperses clips from Hollywood films about religion to punctuate Maher's points, often to hilarious effect. The soundtrack is also used effectively, including such songs as the Doobie Brothers' "Jesus Is Just Alright," Ben Folds's "Jesusland," and Billy Bragg and Wilco's "Christ for President." Like such Michael Moore documentaries as FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, Maher's RELIGULOUS uses humor--and lots of cynicism and sarcasm--to examine controversial theories and topics that people feel very strongly about, no matter what side of the fence they are on. In addition to making audiences laugh, RELIGULOUS will make them think., No religion is safe from the sharp aim--and still sharper wit--of Bill Maher in this comic look at organized belief systems around the world. This controversial documentary is directed by Larry Charles, who previously made both fans and foes with BORAT.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[T]hose with a taste for irreverent humor and clear-eyed analysis will find it funny, enlightening and disturbing."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (10/01/2008)

"[T]he movie has the same loose, on-the-road structure as BORAT. Much of Mr. Maher's film is extremely funny in a similarly irreverent, offhanded way."
New York Times - Stephen Holden (10/01/2008)

"He's a bombs-away provocateur, and in RELIGULOUS, Maher's blasphemous detonation of all things holy and scriptural, he doesn't really pretend to play fair. He's like Lenny Bruce with an inquiring mind and a video camera." -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (10/10/2008)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Bill Maher would have been burned at the stake if his hellishly hilarious and surprisingly thoughtful satire on organized religion had played the Inquisition."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (10/16/2008)

"Maher has an appealing enough presence that the movie ceaselessly entertains....It's engaging and often quite fun to sympathize with Maher's agenda."
Premiere - Eric Kohn (10/03/2008)

RELIGION AROUND THE WORLD

Created: 16/02/09
Features Actors: Bill Maher
Running Time:101 Min.
Rating:R
Genre: Documentary

Just when you thought Bill Maher couldn’t get any more politically incorrect, he goes and makes a movie like “Religulous.” Despite the controversy it’s sparked, however, the documentary isn’t as un-PC as many are making it out to be. Sure, Maher skewers much of the free world on the utter ridiculousness of religion (hence the title, which is a play on the two words), but he never once suggests that God doesn’t exist. He might allude to it several times, but “Religulous” isn’t about denying God's existence – it's about getting the 16% minority of non-believers that Maher has aimed the film at to stand up and make their voices heard. As a subscriber of the "I don't know" theory, Maher is clearly playing it safe, but that doesn't make "Religulous" any less funny, because the comedy speaks for itself.
“Religulous” follows Bill Maher as he travels across America and the rest of the world interviewing people about their religious faith. No stone is left unturned as the political humorist grills everyone from wealthy ministers in $2000 suits to a senior Vatican priest who comically points out that in Italy, Jesus Christ is sixth on the list of saints people pray to.

Bill Maher takes a lighthearted approach, but this may still be conterversial to many people.Hope this helps you decide. Thanks for reading! :)

Religulous

Unfortunately I never saw this in theaters since the ones near where I live are pro-religious fanatics and banned them out of theaters here. This movie was really underrated in my opinion. No one talked about it much and I believe taht was due to the fact that personal belief got in the way of a good movie.

As I said it was not allowed in my local theaters which really annoyed me but now that it's out on dvd I will watch just like how al those so-called "religious fanatics" will behind closed doors because that's the only place where they feel safe and secure. They'll preach about the word of god and sinners and such yet when they get home and kick off those shoes they become the very "sinners" that they were preaching to earlier. Hypocrites.

Funny movie from what I've heard and seen. And was not meant to go out and "change the world". It was meant as a funny movie at the expense of mentally challenged religious zealots who believe in hocus pocus. To quote a scene from Family Guy;

Lois - "Oh my god he(Mel Gibson) just walked right over the edge!"

Peter - "Of course Lois! CHRISTIANS don't BELIEVE in gravity."

Whoever doesn't laugh at that and this movie is a prude. Go watch Leave it to Beaver and say hello to Lincoln in the 1800's then old folks.

The movie brings to light how little Christians actually know about their own religion. They don't take the time to read the Bible, and so, are willing to accept whatever others tell them is in it! It's amazing really, how gullible human beings are and it seems that most Christians have a greater fear of death than atheists do. Isn't the comfort of believing in God, heaven, and angels supposed to take away their fear?

Bill Maher picks away at the various forms of religion in a polite way, and manages to keep the film interesting, informative, and at the same time, funny!
I LOVE this movie and I hope more documentaries like it are made!

Not What I Was Expecting

Created: 25/08/09
To be honest when I bought this movie I believed it would be a documentary putting all religions to the test. It really didn't, Bill Maher was basically bullying everyone. You also would miss a lot of what was being said by the Religious leaders. Maher would cut them off and try to put them on a different point. Basically the catch them off gaurd and hope they sound stupid. You only saw what made Bill look smart. He would hardly let anyone finish what they were saying. He was always on the defensive trying to shoot holes in the person's story. If you have any religious beliefs then this movie is not for you. If you do not like any God or consider yourself an Athiest, then you would like this because it is geared to making religious people look stupid and uneducated.

Bottom line this movie is not about discovering and comparing religions. It is Bill Maher fighting everyone all movie. A waste of money.

Excellent documentary

Created: 13/01/11
Everybody who believe in religion should see this documentary made by Bill Maher, it could well be an eye-opener, it contain facts who put religion in general in a very unfavorable light, but Bill Maher still respect the faith in the interviewee and believers in general. I don't have many more things to say about it... Buy it and make your own opinion about religion after.
