Movie synopsis

During the 17th-century reign of Britain's Charles II a young physician is taken into the decadent court of the King. His talents for healing are overtaken by his even greater talents for debauchery, and he is exiled after falling in love with his wife--the king's mistress. On the outside, he rediscovers his true calling in the plague-infested streets of London. Based on Rose Tremain's 1989 novel. Academy Awards: 2, including Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction.

Restoration DVD

This is the first time I have been asked to write a review, so here we go! I am a big fan of historical fiction, particularly 17th century English history. I recalled seeing this movie many years ago and after seeing The Libertine, my memory was refreshed that this was the same period of time. Of course, finding older DVDs in the marketplace is difficult so I came to eBay for my purchase.
Well crafted story about a young doctor who is brought to the court of King Charles II during the restoration period in England. After a period of time in the favor of King Charles II, he falls out of grace and the story is primarily the one of his way back, so to speak, to Restoration. Cast is great, particularly Robert Downey, Jr. Opulent set decoration, good story although it slows down a bit in the middle. I highly recommend this DVD to those who enjoy period pieces!

A stunningly beautiful costumed movie about the restoration of King Charles 11 to his English throne and a young Doctor who gets caught up in the decadence of the age. Sam Neil (Jurassic Park) plays King Charles perfectly always surrounded with beautiful women and his 18 beloved Spaniels. Robert Downey jr is the Doctor with very advanced views on medicine which he uses during the great plague in London. A joy to watch as a King teaches a young Doctor what is most important in life

Undiscovered gem

Created: 29/10/09
I bought this copy to replace a lost one. Restoration is a rich film, in terms of story, in terms of set and costume, in depth of talent. We're used to seeing Meg Ryan as the plucky, sweet heroine of romantic comedy. In this piece, she shows the tremendous acting abilities that the lightweight stuff cannot show. Robert Downey, Jr. looks at home in both the 17th century wigs and fashions as well as inhabiting this tale of self-indulgence, loss and redemption. I don't meant to give Mr. Downey's performance second billing to Ms. Ryan, but we're used to seeing him plumb the depths. Excellence is his standard.

This is a film to be viewed many, many times.

Great period movie and Doctor's (Downey) med insight A+

Created: 17/05/08
Not only is the history interesting, but the very archaic medical practices were leading into a opening in the first real understanding of human needs.. hope! Where "madness" of that era was labeled upon people who actually many were just suffering the depression or despair of their life's situations which had happened to them to take away that joy of life..interesting theory for the time. Would do much good to have insensitive doctors realize that in these days rather than killing people with so many antidepressants (which are actually sometimes needed, but do also make matters worse than JUST understanding). Robert Downey Jr. did a fantastic acting job in showing his, close to real foolish side, and almost lost the talent he was born with.. so close to his life as it were. Thankfully he now, as in the movie, came to himself and I think anyone who misses this movie and the deep thoughts in it has given up a good watch.

Awesome Movie!

Created: 29/01/11
I've always loved this movie because it is about one man's journey through life, and how he not only loses his self, but also restores his position in the world. It's an inspiring story with an awesome cast, beautiful score, and visually stunning costumes/sets.
