"Rhinestone" is an interesting title. It's one of those films that has a bad taste whenever it's mentioned, though no one recalls actually seeing it. Much like "Gigli" or "The Heartbeeps" or "Ishtar". Movies that have gained a notorious following that no one saw. Whether it due to an inflated budget, huge star power, or enormous production values, for whatever reason the standards were set very high for otherwise average films that failed audiences' high expectations, and for that, they get the lampooning of a lifetime that isn't always deserved. "Rhinestone" is one of those such films. Hot off his Rocky Balboa fame, Stallone was trying all sorts of things to make it as a diversified actor; here he tries singing. The plot is simple, and outrageous at times, but it's lighthearted and if you sit back it's entirely enjoyable.

Dolly Parton plays an aspiring country singer looking for her big break but is unable to make it big because of the contract she's stuck in with a weasel of a manager. In order to break this contract, she makes a wager that she can turn the next ordinary man into a country sensation in order to be released from her contract. And if she can't, she has to sleep with her manager. Nothing short of wholesome. So she takes the loud mouth NY cabbie and tries to make him a country singer. The end.

It's a simple story, with some truly funny moments. And Stallone is a hoot. He has the one liners, his charisma is oozing everywhere, and he's obviously having a fun time. Dolly Parton is...Dolly Parton. She's subtle, reserved, and sporting cleavage in every scene but is appaulled when men notice. Nothing new.

I enjoyed the film, I don't know what else to say but that's it's simple entertainment and was held to unfair standards of it's time and has never been able to shake it's label. It's by no means a great film, but it's not a bad one either. Stallone is a blast and Tim Thomerson (what happened to him?) gives a fun performance to even things out. Give it a shot?

I have seen this movie several times, and it improves with age. No longer do I cringe at the impossible outfits Dolly Parton is squeezed into, with no taste. Instead I revel in that glorious voice, the gentleness of its lyrics and sit back and enjoy. Sylvester Stallone was a joy - all those macho movies were a waste of time, he should have gone for comedy, he would have appealed to a wider range of audience. It's not a difficult concept of story, turning a tone deaf taxi driver into a country singer. Of course it ends happily and there I am cheering along with the most gullible of them all, grinning like an idiot.
Let's not get pompous about this - it's a fun movie, no more, no less. Sit back and enjoy.

Stallone and Dolly in the same flick?

Created: 11/08/09
This movie is classic bad. So bad it's good. Dolly was her full figured self and Stallone was the ultimate meatball as always (Hop a long meatball as his on screen dad dubbed him) This movie isnt that easy to find as it's out of print, but if you ever can grab a copy at a reasonable price, get it. One of my favorite lines in the movie is when Dolly is trying to get Sly to walk like a cowboy, and he's not catching on, so she tells him to walk like he has a bad case of jock itch. If you're a Dolly fan, which I am, you will love the movie as Dolly is her usual sassy self and the songs that she sings (without stallone) are amazing as always. 4 stars from Utah!

This was a very good movie, Dolly parton and Sylvester Stalone had exceptional chemestry together, however, at times it was a bit slow hence why i gave the rating a good rating and not excellent, but, if you wish a good family, funny movie i would recommend this for the whole family to enjoy.
