Movie synopsis

This epic chronicle of the seven pilots chosen to become astronauts for Project Mercury is based on the novel by Tom Wolfe. Deep in the desert during the 1950s, army test pilots courageously fought to break the sound barrier. These maverick men would stop at nothing to achieve winning speed. Led by their champion, Chuck Yeager (Sam Shepard), they caroused at the local watering hole while sharing tales of extreme sport and bravery--until the Russians successfully sent their Sputnik satellite into the skies, and the United States government panicked, quickly launching a space program of its own. In an effort to find the right men for the job, the government searched the desert and the seas, compiling a crew of daredevil space cowboys willing to do anything for the chance to represent America in the space race. After grueling medical, physical, and psychological tests, seven men were left standing, led by American hero John Glenn (Ed Harris), test pilots Gordon Cooper (Dennis Quaid), Gus Grissom (Fred Ward), and Scott Carpenter (Charles Frank), and Navy man Alan Shepard (Scott Glenn). With the help of the media and the government, these men became overnight heroes, sacrificing their freedom and their families for the dream of space travel. This piercing exploration of the men and wives behind the mission serves as a testament to the determination of America to dominate the field of space exploration, while offering an intriguing portrait of a period in which America wanted to believe in perfect men and their perfect wives, even if the reality was vastly more complex. Philip Kaufman's gripping film also features fabulous special effects and stunning aerial cinematography.

Sure its long, but its such a great movie!

Created: 30/05/06
Yeah, this movie is 3+ hours and it certainly won't appeal to a very broad audience, but if you were the kind of kid that dreamed of being a pilot or astronaut, this movie is for you.

Great characters paved the way through a historic period of flight and space flight in 50's and 60's and this movie brings those characters to life- Chuck Yeager, John Glenn, Alan Shephard, and on and on. Its a great story, great visuals, and great music to go with it.

Send the kids out to see the latest Pixar movie. Send the wife out with her friends. Grab a bag of popcorn, have a Coke or Bud (just make sure you're drinking an American beer when watching this movie), and get ready to dream about being a pilot or astronaut all over again!

Great Educational Tool

Created: 06/06/06
The main reason why I purchased the "THE RIGHT STUFF" was as an educational tool for my two boys eleven and eight. They love learning about space and everything they can they also love to build models. So one day I was telling them about rockets that I used to make in school and then launch them off. So we went to the store puchaseded some rockets built them but I told them before we would launch them there was a movie that they need to watch first. I went to alot of stores looking for this movie and couldn't find it anywhere until I went on ebay and found it. When the movie arived they watched it and learned who was the first guy to break the sound barrior and who the first people in space and also how many attepts it took making rockets before they got it right.Whilw launching our rockets I asked them all kinds of questions about who did what and when. To my amazement they still wanted to learn more. Since then we have learned that Niel Armsrong not only walked on the moon the same year I was born but him and I share the same birthday. My boys got a kick out of thet. We are also now going to go visit the NASA space center here in FLorida and watch the next shuttle launch. I recomend this movie to anyone whose children a interested in space or rockets it is an excellent movie for all to enjoy. And if your children are not that interested in space have them watch this movie it will change thier minds. At the movie will not sit there and collect dust I know mine is watched at least once a week thats how enjoyable the movie is.
