The Rocker (DVD, 2009, 2-Disc Set, Includes Digital Copy; Checkpoint, Sensormatic)

Peter Cattaneo, Anthony Richmond, Rainn Wilson|Theatrical release: 2008 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Slovenly drummer Robert "Fish" Fishman (THE OFFICE's Rainn Wilson) is booted out of his 1980s hair metal band, Vesuvius, right as they're signed to a big label, crushing his dreams and leading to a 20-year stretch of office park employment. A second chance comes in the form of his overweight teenage keyboardist nephew (Josh Gad) who needs an emergency drummer for his band's gig at the prom. It's an odd match--an '80s metal guy in a teen emo-lite band (their name is A.D.D.)--but he's soon offering fatherly counsel to fatherless boy singer Curtis (Teddy Geiger), giving hair gel tips to the foxy bassist (Emma Stone), and working to get the band a club gig. Soon A.D.D. is signed to the same label as Vesuvius, poised for major MTV-stardom, all leading to a big arena spot as the opening band for the dreaded Vesuvius. Fish needs to overcome his tantrum-throwing ways and step up to the kit, if he wants to impress Curtis's hot mom (Christina Applegate) and outrock his former colleagues. A cross between rock star fantasia à la SCHOOL OF ROCK and the Will Ferrell School of man-child comedy, THE ROCKER benefits from tight editing and pretty decent songs. Real-life musician Geiger saves some rough stretches with his easygoing charisma, while Peter Best (the drummer dropped from the Beatles and hence the quintessential "dumped drummer") makes a cameo. It's directed by Peter Cattaneo of THE FULL MONTY

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"The movie carries off the trick of conjuring nostalgia for the bad old days when bands trashed hotel rooms and drank themselves into oblivion while making such behavior appear pathetic."
New York Times - Stephen Holden (08/20/2008)

"[T]here's something pleasantly old-fashioned about the movie's leisurely pace....Wilson is at his most animated when demonstrating what aficionados know as 'drum face,' his mouth stretched wide in a primal yell."
Los Angeles Times - Sam Adams (08/20/2008)

3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] a game cast and a boisterous lead from Wilson....FULL MONTY director Cattaneo thumps out the tantrums-and-triumphs storybeats with ease....Likable..."
Empire - Simon Crook (09/01/2008)

GREAT Rock Movie !!

Created: 10/03/10
Usually only once a decade does a great rock n roll movie come down the pike. In the 1980's,it was Get Crazy, in the 90's, Almost Famous, but in the first decade of the 21st Century, we were doubly blessed. First, it was The Rocker, then Band Slam.

These kinds of movies usually only appeal to those who have been in a band, or worked around one. For a year, in college, I was in a regional band that sold out venues in our area. Being in or around a band, you understand that a band is made up of very different personalities, and therein lies, The Rocker.

Fish, a drummer in a band on the verge of superstardom, is kicked out in favor of a nephew of a Recording Company executive. Fish's life goes into a tailspin, and the story picks up twenty years later. Fish is in a soul sucking job, which he loses when a guy in his office plays the latest from his former band. Fish loses it, then loses his job. That same day, he loses his girlfriend, and his apartment.

He ends up living in his sister's attic. His nephew, who plays keyboards in a garage band, loses his drummer due to an outrageous school prank. Fish is a last second fill in so the band can play their high school prom. When his unauthorized drum solo ruins their debut and hets him kicked out of the band, Fish realizes that he's got a second musical chance to get it right.

Fish asks for reinstatement, if he can get the band a real gig. With the gig delivered, fate intervenes, but this sets up a youtube prank which exposes the band, and Fish's bare behind (all of it, ALL). Will the band acheive stardom? Watch the DVD and see.

I bought the DVD off of ebay, but unfortunately, it was one of those blockbuster used DVD's with just the movie on the DVD. All of the extras have to be seen to really appreciate the movie. Like Whale Rider, it's a must see to watch the extras. So, if you buy the DVD, get one with all the extras on it, otherwise you're missing out on something special.

Surprising movie

I bought this movie after seeing it on cable and watching it almost every time it came on. It's that funny. It's one of those movies you can just stick in the dvd when you don't want to tackle a new movie. I watched it several times before I realized that Rainn Wilson was the same guy that is in The Office. The two characters are extreme opposites. The actors in this movie are extraordinary! They made it believable. Every move and look seemed ad lib and thus real.

Rainn Wilson's character had it all, TWICE. Then he lost it all, TWICE. He gets a third chance with the help of his nephew and.... watch the movie! You won't be disappointed! The soundtrack is awesome.

Everything combined makes this one of my top ten comedy movies.

The Rocker

This is a very entertaining comedy with a good original music score and a plot that will keep you interested while your laughing!!
The background soundtrack is top shelf if your a headbanging rocker!!
Originally saw this flick, out of state, at a friend's home and decided that I had to have it. Raine Wilson is hilarious and pathetic at the same time. Christina Applegate is great as a "mom" and looks fabulous!!!!

I love this Movie!!

I loved this movie because it was set in Ohio for one. But the story was great. a guy gets kicked out of his hair band in the 80's and 20 years later he gets picked up by his nephew's band and he still has the hair. The music is great, any of these songs could easily be on the radio today without missing a beat.

Surprisingly Funny!

I love Rainn Wilson in "The Office" but was unsure about this movie. I figured it might be worth a rent but saw a great deal on eBay so decided to pick it up. Ten Minutes into the movie I was already happy with my purchase. The rest of the movie is not quite as funny as the beginning but it is charming and funny throughout. I probably could have given this movie an excellent rating had it not had the worst music i could imagine. A movie called the rocker should be a little more AC/DC and a little less Hanson. That being said I did enjoy the movie and will likely watch it a few more times.

If you are a comedy lover such as myself I could definitely recommend this movie for purchase, if you only enjoy the occasional comedy then it'd probably be a good title to go on the netflix queue.
