The Rookie (DVD, 2002, Widescreen)

John Lee Hancock, Dennis Quaid|Theatrical release: 2002 | Rating: G (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Every evening, Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid) is out practicing pitching. His minor league career ended with a shoulder injury 12 years ago. Now, Jim coaches a struggling high school team. When he tries to motivate them, they challenge him--if they reach the play offs, he must try out for the majors. The team starts to win, and makes the play offs. Not realizing how strong his arm has become, Jim is apprehensive as he sets off for the try outs with his son and baby daughter. The coaches recognize him, but think he has brought a young prospect. Late in the day, as he's changing a diaper, Jim is called. When he throws his first pitch, he surprises the coaches--and himself.Director John Lee Hancock, director of photography John Schwartzman, and composer Carter Burwell have made a glowing movie based on the true story of Jim Morris, investing it with a touch of myth. Dennis Quaid is convincing as the pitcher. His scenes with Brian Cox, playing his father, bristle with unresolved anger. The great Australian actress Rachel Griffiths shows her extraordinary chameleon-like ability--as Jim's tough-minded wife, she captures perfectly a woman who has to deal with life's practicalities and with her husband's dreams.

Great baseball move for the whole family

Created: 16/09/09
If you are looking for a family movie with some action and sports (baseball), then The Rookie is a great choice. Inspired by a true story, it is a great story about going after your dreams no matter what your age. I think one of the things I love most about this movie is the way the movie stresses having a good, strong support system around you throughout your life.

It is a good balance between sports action scenes (for the guys) and emotional/feel-good scenes (for the gals). The acting is pretty good for a family-focuses movie and the baseball is authentic.

We kept coming across this movie on TV and found ourselves watching it almost every time. I said enough of this, let's just get the movie so we can watch it whenever we want. So we did. You will not be disappointed.

Great family film

This entertaining and touching story shows how dreams, even really big ones, sometimes come true. A caring husband and father in his thirties may have the chance to follow his dream of pitching for major league baseball--if the highschool baseball team he coaches can pull it together and win the district championship.

Wonderful acting and lots of laughs!! Great for the entire family.

Great Family Movie!

Created: 03/06/10
We love the fact that this is a true story
and that real life was so closely followed,
except for the part where Jim gave the base-
ball to his Dad. He really gave it to his son.
No bad language or nudity. The DVD is in great
shape and the service was also great. We were
happy with the low price and will order from
here again without hesitation.
