Performing with drummer Elvin Jones and other players who worked with the elder Coltrane, Ravi continues to propel his father's musical dream, carrying the elan of deep, probing, saxophone-driven jazz into the 21st century.Coltrane's group, highlighted by the impressive trumpet stylings of Ralph Alessi and pianist Geri Allen, blends together sweet melodic sensibilities with angular harmonic underpinnings. The music pushes tonal boundaries (as modern jazz is wont to do), but the mostly original track list never sounds forced or strained. Standouts include the lush ballad, "Consequence" and the delicate swing of "Blues A La Carte," the latter of which is an extraordinary homage to tenor and soprano sax great Wayne Shorter.
