Rumor Has It (DVD, 2006, Widescreen)

Rob Reiner, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

With the romantic comedy RUMOR HAS IT, director Rob Reiner (WHEN HARRY MET SALLY) attempts the tricky task of creating a film based on an already celebrated classic, 1967's THE GRADUATE. Starring Dustin Hoffman and based on a novel by Charlie Webb, the original film revolved around the love triangle between a recent college-graduate, his girlfriend, and her famously seductive mother. Here, Reiner casts a chain-smoking Shirley MacLaine as the supposed real-life inspiration for Mrs. Robinson, and Jennifer Aniston as her granddaughter. Set for the most part within the gossipy community of Pasadena, California, the film follows Sarah Huttinger (Aniston) and her fiancé (Mark Ruffalo) as they travel home for her perky sister's (Mena Suvari) wedding. Having nothing in common with her family, Sarah is intrigued upon learning that she may actually be the secret love child of her deceased mother and Beau Borroughs (Kevin Costner), the man whose affairs with both Sarah's mother and grandmother supposedly inspired Charlie Webb, a classmate and friend of Beau, to write THE GRADUATE. From here, Sarah seeks out Beau, interested in him as a father-like figure and possibly more. Aniston brings a Rachel-like (FRIENDS) comic vibe to her character, frequently expressing her neuroses by talking to herself out loud in a sitcom-ish style. Costner is plenty capable in his role, but even with Beau's riches and charm, viewers may find it hard to understand why a young woman would embark on a romance with the same man who bedded her mother and grandmother. Reiner's script veers away from the classic romantic comedy formula by keeping Ruffalo's character at the sidelines. Rather, RUMOR HAS IT focuses on one woman's journey towards adulthood, self-realization, and acceptance of her origins via a path that while strange and potentially incestuous, seems to be family tradition.

I actually liked this romantic comedy. It is totally chessy, but it was really fun to watch. It's just your plain romantic comedy, but has some not-laughable laughs in it. Shirley MacLaine portrays her character Katharine really funny, or otherwise know as Grandma of Jennifer Aniston's character, Sarah Huttinger. This romantic comedy is one word, "cheesy" but it's able to entertain its audience (or at least me). The movie is a little confusing, like why would she want to screw a man that is way older than her (Sara) when she has a fiance, her mother (now dead) and her grandmother already screwed him? There are a lot of questions in this good romantic comedy.

On her way to a family marriage (Sara's sister) she brings her fiance along, Jeff Daly portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, but wants to keep it a secret for awhile. They try to screw each other in a bathroom on the plane they are on, but find it rather hard.

Sara wonders why she doesn't fit in with her family; she's not a blonde, she doesn't play tennis, etc... That's when the adventure to find out who she really is takes off when she thinks that her family was the inspiration of a book and movie called "The Graduate."

Because her Mother (now dead) ran away for a week to Mexico before her wedding, she discovers Beau Burroughs portrayed by Kevin Costner, she thinking he screwed her mother before the wedding and had gotten her mother pregnant with her.

A heart warming story, this is based on a true rumor. I liked this rumor/story, call me cheesy but I did. It brought just a few tears to my eyes, but it was rather dull and annoying at some parts because it wouldn't get to the point. Aniston is a wonderful actress in this movie, becoming very charming as Sara. This is recommended if you're a sucker for romance movies.

Hope you enjoy!

Rumor Has It Review

"Rumor Has It" has something for everyone. For comedy fans, it offers a wacky retelling of the story behind one of the most well-known movies of all time, "The Graduate." Sarah, played by Jennifer Aniston is introduced as a normal 20-something dealing with the pressures of returning home to a family she never quite fit in with to attend her bubbly, younger sister's wedding. She is also dealing with her boyfriend's marriage proposal and the fear of settling down.

At home, she reconnects with her grandmother, Katherine played by a wonderfully sarcastic Shirley MacLaine. Sarah learns through a hilarious series of events that her family is the notorious Robinsons who inspired the classic film. It is the strong performances of the actors that allow the viewer to buy into the story and root for Sarah to come to terms with her family, her life and her relationship with her boyfriend, Jeff.

For romance fans, the movie offers the wonderful love story between Sarah's parents, her sister and new husband and Sarah and Jeff. Each of the relationships experiences pitfalls but as in most romantic comedies, go on to prove that true love wins out.

For fans of Jennifer, this movie is one of her best. It showcases her as a neurotic, insecure, loveable character, much like the infamous Rachel Green she portrayed on "Friends."

This movie is a fun, easy to follow comedy. If you've seen "The Graduate," you'll have a whole new appreciation for the story. If you haven't, you'll want to as soon as possible!

Cute Take On The Story Behind The Story

Created: 29/06/06
Was their really a Mrs. Robinson and could it possibly be Sarah Huttington's (Jennifer Anniston) saucy gradma played by Shirley Maclaine? Even more intriguing is The Graduate himself Sarah's real Father? Sarah goes on a quest to San Francisco to find out the answers. But more importantly she finds out a lot about herself in this cute comedy also starring Kevin Costner. I thought the story behind the story idea was clever.

Very Funny

Created: 14/06/06
This is a great movie. Sara(Anniston) is recently engaged to a great guy. She is freaked out by the concept of marriage. When she returns home to Pasadena for her sisters wedding, she discovers that the movie and book "The Graduate" was based on her family's lives. She discovers that her mom ran off a week prior to the marriage of her father to Mexico. Her mother had an affair with an ex-lover(Beau Burroughs played by Costner) of her mother's(Sara's Grandmother). This was about the same time she was conceived, so she rushes to find out if Bueu is her father. She finds that it isn't her father and has an affair with Bueu. (Three generations have slept with the same guy, yuk.) This jeopardizes the relationship with her fiance. This is a very funny movie. You'll love it.

Great movie! Can watch it time and again.

Didn't know what to expect when movie started with the references to "The Graduate" but it was fun to watch the way Aniston portrays her character. I have to admit that I was hoping she would pick Costner (he's still got it)!!! I like anything Aniston is in, and I was not disappointed with this one. The grandmother in the move was a hoot. She added to the comedy, and who better to play the part. I also got a great deal. The price I paid for the movie and shipping was several dollars less than what I would have paid in the stores!!
