Product description

Product Information
Saga Frontier breaks the mold of traditional role-playing games. Thanks to the Free Scenario System, the player has the opportunity to complete seven different quests, each with a unique lead character and story. However, all of the stories take place in the same world, and most of the stories intersect at various points. This particular arrangement allows the player unprecedented freedom. In addition, the battle system also takes a different approach: rather than conserving hit points (they regenerate between fights), players must conserve weapon points, which are used to unleash powerful attacks. Multiple attacks can be combined to create even more devastating combinations. Try to discover the links between all of the characters and the greater evil guiding all of the events in Saga Frontier.

Bought this as a replacement that I had from 98' Overlooked RPG series from Japan. By the same company, Squaresoft, that brought games like Final Fantasy Series, Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger. Turn based battle system, but you do not gain levels or experience just get better at what you do ex use your fist will result in a possible strength or hit point increase, all gains are random, including skills. Story is nonlinear as you can pick from 5 different main characters, some are human, half mystic, monster and a mec.Multiple characters are recruitable throughout the story lines. Game can be frustrating at times since monster grow stronger as you do. Replay value is very high. I think it's one of the best sprite based rpgs ever.Newbies might be frustrated with the stat gain system, but i think it is very well thought out and implemented. Once you get the hang of it, try Lute's or Blue's story first as they are pretty open as far as exploration and Blue is pretty powerful at the beginning. Stick with it and it is a very rewarding and refreshing old school rpg. They don't make them like this anymore.

I had high expectations for an RPG by Squaresoft from 1998. This era seemed to be their golden age when it came to RPGs. Unique gameplay, epic quests, immersing stories. I had been used to the Final Fantasy series, and others like Xenogears and Vagrant Story. Even other companies produced wonderful RPGs with great stories like Legend of Dragoon. This is what I was hoping for when I bought Saga Frontier. The premise seemed amazing, with 7 different characters, each with their own story.

The trouble is, there's hardly any story! I played through as Blue first, and there's literally maybe one or two paragraphs of story driven dialogue the entire game!!! I was shocked! Emelia had a more engaging plot, but it was still very, very weak.

Music and graphics wise, the game is pretty weak. The pre-rendered backgrounds were nothing special. It was confusing to locate the multiple exits on any given screen. Sometimes you had to luckily, blindly stumble upon the exit to figure out where you have to go.

The gameplay is fun. Battling is basically everything in Saga Frontier, and it is at least fun to do. The game requires quite a bit of grinding, but I didn't find myself minding to do it.

I did find myself wanting to beat the game as quickly as I could through 2 of the 7 scenarios, so it felt like I got my money's worth before moving on to a better game.

If you can find this game for $10, it would be worth the buy just to experience it, but it certainly isn't worth much more than that.

The Best

Created: 30/05/06
This Game is by far the best RPG ever!! I've played just about every RPG made and the idea of playing multiple characters in one world is brilliant. T260G is the best character in any game i've played the combos are killer and the enemies don't advance in difficulty too quickly.
When the game was still for rent in the movie store, I rented it many many times. So many times that i could have bought four times. So naturally when I did finally get enough money to purchase it, guess what, DISCONTINUED!!! I was like what the hell the best game ever and now i can't buy it. Why me? So naturally, http://www.ebay.com , haha, now I have the best games ever.
It's hours and hours of side quest beating, monster butt kicking fun!!! If you're a die hard rpg fan or just somebody that likes an occasional challenge this game is for you.
My only beef with it is the graphics. They kind of remind me of nintendo 64. If you can get past that, loads of fun await.

The game that was pushed under the rug...

Created: 23/11/08
From the moment I read about this game in PSGamer magazines long ago I was stoked. This game was very innovative to the RPG genre and was sadly shot down by people that didn't give it a real chance. Most of all, people aimed at this game by the non-lvling system and the "horrible" graphics.

This is a sprite based game with realistic 3-D backgrounds, its very strange, and probably isnt for those people seeking high lvl graphics. What it is however is jam packed with tons of skills, customization, free roaming, and the choice to choose which way you will take the game. Along traveling you can pick up comrades or abandom them.

Either way, you'll find yourself in a game that is much more challenging than any other Squaresoft game thrown at you. This game doesn't hold your hand all the way through it. Because of this, I found a deep passion for it. I'm envious of it's creators and really enjoy playing this game over and over.

The only good game in the saga series

Created: 19/04/09
Another great game by square. Seven different characters with seven different stories. each character gives you their own unique perspective of the saga frontier universe. only downside to this game is you need a memory card dedicated only to saga frontier to get the full experience of it. other than that, it is a very fun game to play.
