) The "SAS Survival Handbook" by John Wiseman is a great manual for emergency survival and living off the land/water techniques. Using back to the basics knowledge and a few well chosen tools a prepared person can increase the odds of their or a group's survival in any type of situation, anywhere in the world, in any climate.
The book is broken out in to easy quick to find subjects with detailed step-by-step how to explanations and illustrations, which range from listing essential tools, making camp, food and first aid.
The only negative is the book has so much information that the book not light or compact for a backpacker. However, next to a spiritual book of your choice, I would highly recommend this pragmatic survival manual to be a part of anyone's backpack.

) This is the survival book to buy if you plan on buying only one. It has illustrations, great useful information, and has the tendency to spark ideas relative to survival. The book even contains some color illustrations for identifying plants. Most illustrations are clear with explanations on how to perform certain tasks like fire building and camp building. Also details on for how to utilize animals for food and supplies while out in the wilderness. This survival books meets all of my needs so I highly recommend this as the one book to carry for that "just in case" moment.

A very comprehensive book on survival procedure and items. I can understand now why it is read by many of our special forces around the world. This book went into my BOB as soon as I finished reading it.
If you do not have a copy I would recomend getting one, even if you just keep it around your house.
