Saw III (Blu-ray Disc, 2007, Blu-Ray Widescreen)

Darren Lynn Bousman, Tobin Bell|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

In 2004, a low-budget horror film about a man who put people with moral failings into grisly, murderous situations became a huge hit. In 2005, the sequel scored again, upping the body count and the terror. In 2006, the franchise continued, with plenty of gore as well as an emotional story line that delved into the psychological makeup of the main characters. As SAW II concluded, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) was dying. But that doesn't mean his penchant for playing games of torture and violence is ending. In SAW III, the murders start occurring again, and Kerry (Dina Meyer) is back on the case, although she thinks this time it might be the work of a copycat. She's only partly right: Amanda (Shawnee Smith), the only victim to have survived both movies, has joined Jigsaw as his apprentice, leading the way through a terrifying game involving Lynn (Bahar Soomekh), a doctor in an unhappy marriage, and Jeff (Angus Macfadyen), a distraught man who is having trouble getting over the loss of his son (Stefan Georgiou) at the hands of a drunk driver. Amanda has captured Lynn and placed her in a neck brace that is linked to Jigsaw's heart monitor; she must keep Jigsaw alive or else the brace will explode. Meanwhile, Jeff is sent on a dangerous journey on which he faces all the people involved in the light penalty his boy's killer received--and it is up to him whether he will seek vengeance or offer forgiveness. Helmed by SAW II director Darren Lynn Bousman and written by original SAW screenwriter and star Leigh Whannell (with a story by Whannell and SAW director James Wan), SAW III is an intricately designed, gruesome thriller with a hard-driving soundtrack featuring songs by Slayer, Helmet, and All that Remains.

Saw III -- Heavy on gore, but...

Created: 14/02/07
This is important: If you haven't seen the first two movies, stop reading this and buy/rent those before you pick this one up. You'll get much more enjoyment out of this one if you have the back story...Trust me.

Saw III is a good sequel, but not a great stand-alone movie. This installment is NOT light on the gory content by any stretch of the imagination, but it left something to be desired. I am a avid horror film viewer and am willing to give anything a chance. When the first Saw came out, I reluctantly watched it and was immediately hooked. I suffered no such reluctance with Saw II or Saw III and went to see both the day they hit the theaters. I could have saved myself $7.25 on Saw III and waited for it to come out on DVD.

Why should I have waited? This movie was simply not on the same level as the first two. I was disappointed by the lack of "games." Oh, there are the typical Jigsaw-esque games, but not like the first two. There are really only a couple of characters forced to play games, unlike the first two. Most of the movie is spent testing one character's ability to forgive the man responsible for killing his son. (don't worry, that's not a spoiler; you get that info right away.) The flashback scenes leave you slightly confused, wondering what this information has to do with the movie.

It has plot twists, gore and games...but I felt like something was missing... I liked the movie but it wasn't as good as it's predecessors.

IF YOU LIKE GORE, THIS IS THE MOVIE FOR YOU! All things considered, this is only average. They could have done much better.

This one's definately not suitable for the kids, though.

Saw it Before

Created: 24/01/07
If you haven't seen the original two, I highly suggest you watch them first, as this movie would not have anywhere near the depth it has with knowledge of the preceding events.

That said, Saw III is quite a good sequel, in that it develops on the important events and subplots of the previous installments. It again contains clever traps and hair-raising situations that cause people to reevaluate their ethical beliefs, and includes the same multiple-twist style ending as the first two movies in the series.

I would not rate it quite as highly as the previous two versions, only because much of the tension is lost when fewer characters are interacting in the "games," and the connections between the characters who are playing the games are not revealed until later. It is not that the characters are two-dimensional, it's probably caused by the gradual nature of the revelations.

Nevertheless, the Saw series continues to be among the more intelligent offerings in a genre not traditionally known for its intelligence. Above-average acting, intriguing situations, and well-paced storytelling all contribute to making this film a must-see for horror/suspense lovers.

Gruesome, gory, frightening... perfect

Created: 15/02/07
This movie was absolutley spectacular, the best of the three saw films. Gruesome, gory, frightening... perfect It brings the entire series to an absolute great ending and answers all the questions you didn't know you had.

The acting is great, Tobin Bell is spectacular, and the death scenes are even more gruesome than the previous Saw films.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Rent or buy?: A must buy for any fan of the Saw series.

The Best Saw Yet

Created: 26/01/07
You will want to see Saw 1 and 2 before you see this one because tell's you how some parts were done in them so you will need to see them to understand. I will have to say that this is the best in the series. I didn't think the Saw movies could get better but Saw just did get better. The death traps in this Saw are even better than the other 2, and this is a very intense, gorey, and bloody horror movie, & more so than the others. If you like the Saw 1, and 2 you will for sure love this one. Now, the way this one end sure will leave you thinking there won't be no more Saw movies so that is a bummer. You will want to add this to you collection of Movies this is one to own not rent if your into Horror flicks. This might not be a movie for the young kiddies to see or they may not sleep well after seeing this one. So, Beware Kids. I give this a 5 out of 5.
