Movie synopsis

The quintessential '80s teen romance, this film has retained its poignancy into the next century with its ability to entertain and amuse while remaining intelligent and packed with real emotion that anyone can empathize with. John Cusack plays Lloyd Dobler, a high schooler on the cusp of graduation who devotes himself to the pursuit of Diane Court (Ione Skye), the aloof class valedictorian who happens to be beautiful as Corey (Lily Taylor), Lloyd's best friend puts it, "a brain trapped in the body of a game show hostess." When Lloyd calls Diane to invite her to a graduation party, she doesn't know who he is, but she's charmed by his nervous chatter and surprises everyone by accepting. Lloyd at first even manages to charm Diane's overprotective father Jim Court (John Mahoney) as well, with whom Diane is very close, though Jim can't see why his daughter is wasting her time with Lloyd. The party scene in SAY ANYTHING ranks among the best ever, with Eric Stoltz making a cameo as the party host, Lily Taylor as the ultimate lovelorn rock chick, and even Chynna Phillips putting in an appearance. After their successful first date, Diane asks Lloyd to dinner with her father and some of his associates; there, when asked his plans for the future, Lloyd lets loose a speech way ahead of its time, which slackers everywhere will be able to appreciate. Unfortunately, Jim Court does not, and Lloyd's professed intention to "spend as much time as possible with your daughter" strikes a chord of horror for him; he wages a campaign to sabotage the relationship, which almost succeeds. But when Jim's secrets come to light, Diane is forced to question who it is she can really trust in her life.Cameron Crowe's film, which he made when he was only 21, is told with honesty, humor, and emotion that never crosses into the realm of the sappy. Cusack's character, who might verge on the cheesy or the stalkeresque if played by someone else, manages to be a unique, charming, stand-up guy with a heart of gold, while retaining a bit of a dark side that rounds him out. Outstanding performances are turned in by all involved, and this film proves once again Crowe's place as the spokesman for teen love and romance in general.

A film that will truly make you fall in love

Created: 04/10/05
If you ask me to name one of my ten top movies of all time, this movie is the first one that comes to mind. I just absolutely love it! Who wouldn't? The film is so full of memorable scenes that you just cant forget. Of course there's the famous scene where Lloyd holds up the boom box playing Peter Gabriel's "In your Eyes" just outside Diane's window. There are also lots of other moments too. One of my favorites is the one in the diner where Diane tells Lloyd that she just wants to be friends. Lloyd replies that they can just be friends - friends with potential. I can't forget that line, it was so witty, you just got to fall in love with Lloyd Dobler!

That's what's great about this film. It has one of the best written characters that I've seen - wonderfully portrayed by John Cusack. Lloyd Dobler is this ordinary young guy, who doesn't think much of his future, but knows what he wants in life - to be with Diane Court. He manages to do that in the course of the film and does it quite well. His sincere affection for Diane is the one that makes her fall in love with him and as well as make you fall in love with him as well.

This movie has a lot of quotable quotes which is too many to mention ( you might want to click on the additional information for the DVD on this page as some quotes get mentioned here). If you are a true fan, you'll definitely want to own the DVD copy. Aside from deleted scenes, the DVD also includes a commentary by John Cusack, Ione Skye and Cameron Crowe with lots of trivia!

One of the best films ever. Thank you Cameron Crowe, for making this one!

Best movie ever

A personal fav. Cameron Crowe's best movie, his most human and well-made film. Great screenplay, not perfect, but really driven by real and multi-dimensional lead characters. Cusack is awesome. John Mahoney is able to overcame the flaws in his character to deliver a masterful performance. And the message about love totally rocks! Nothing better than the scene of Cusack holding up the boombox or the breakup scene where he slows down in his Malibu and then parks the car, takes the key out, and says "Wait, what did we just decide?" to offer real slices of life. "I'm looking for a dare to be great situation" has got to be one of the all time best movie lines. No "English tips" here, just a great movie!

Say Anything - Cameron Crowe Classic

Created: 01/10/08
This is a blast from the past - the 80s that is, and it's one of the reasons I fell in love with John Cusack. I own most of Cameron Crowe's movies, so having this one was a must. Lloyd Dobler (Cusack) is a nice guy who just graduated high school and decides to ask out the "brain" of their class. Ione Skye plays the "brain" with beauty. She gives him a chance, completely unaware of his charm and ability to make her fall in love with him. It's a non-conforming love story with an awesome soundtrack. Cusack's famous scene of him standing outside Skye's window, playing "In Your Eyes" from his boom box gave all guys ideas for love.

"Say Anything" (2002, DVD)

I have always loved this movie! I saw it with my husband when it first came out... what an amazing "study" of teenage life - from love to peer pressure, to acceptance, to forgiveness, to making the best of any situation! This is a great movie for anyone looking for a great love story that includes a little heart break too! A great first for Cameron (Writer/Director)... a true must see!

I was so happy to find it on - where else? eBay! AND, for a terrific price too! This isn't the easiest flick to find on store shelves... so happy to FINALLY have it in my collection!

AH, romance! Falling in love with what seems an untouchable...The soundtrack is amazing as well! I have both the movie and soundtrack. My mind will never forget the scene with the boombox, serenading with peter gabriel, 'In your eyes, they light the heat, in your eyes, I am complete, In your eyes, I see the doorway to a thousand churches. (The words are right, for the most part). And if you want to hear more, buy the song or the movie! Or both, because they are worth it!
