Scarface (DVD, 2006, 2-Disc Set, Platinum Edition)

Brian De Palma, Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer|Theatrical release: 1983 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Brian De Palma's blood-and-sun-drenched saga of a Cuban deportee's rise to the top of Miami's cocaine business has become something of a popular classic since its release; it's been referenced in rap songs and subsequent gangster movies and quoted the world over. Despite this lovefest with the dialogue, the film's brutal violence and lack of positive characters still make it controversial and disliked by certain critics. Al Pacino stars as Tony Montana, whose intelligence, guts, and ambition help him skyrocket from dishwasher to the top of a criminal empire but whose eventual paranoia and incestuous desire for his kid sister (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) prove his undoing. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Tony's neglected coke-addicted trophy wife, and Steven Bauer is his concerned friend. F. Murray Abraham, Robert Loggia, and Paul Shenar are some of Tony's sleazy business partners and potential killers. Oliver Stone wrote the expletive-packed screenplay, based on Howard Hawks's 1932 version--which was ostensibly about Al Capone and starred Paul Muni and George Raft. The synth-heavy Giorgio Moroder score expertly evokes the drug-fueled decadence of 1980s Miami, and De Palma provides several of his elaborate set pieces, including a horrific showstopper in a motel room with a chain saw.

The Midas Touch in Reverse

Created: 31/12/06
People referred to this movie throughout college. There were posters, songs, quotes from the movie ("Say hello to my lil friend!") and comments about Al Pacino dropping the f- bomb. After years of second-hand hearsay, I finally watched the movie.

What a waste. Al Pacino's character, Tony Montana, was talked about like some kind of hero, and yet he dies alone, snorting a mountain of coke, killing his own sister, and falling into a pool filled with his own blood. This is what all the hype was about? It's sick. Like the magazine Variety wrote, this is a "modern morality play." Tony Montana is a drug lord King Midas. Everything he touches turns to money or (cocaine) and dies. He destroys every life he comes in contact with: family, friends, business associates.

Oliver Stone's Scarface is meant as a cautionary tale, but it is scary how many interpret Montana as a role model. There is nothing about him worth emulating. With 218 f-words, chain saw mutilations, numerous shootings, drug abuse, rampant sexist remarks and gruesome betrayal, this movie is a story in how NOT to live. If you haven't seen it, you aren't missing anything.

Must See For All Ages... Not Really

Created: 10/10/06
It is a must see, of course, but definitely not for all ages. I'm not letting my kid see it, I'd be spending the rest of my life washing her mouth out and teaching her the f word is very bad. Anyways, on to the movie, anyone with a pulse knows about this movie. you gotta own it. People model their lives around Tony Montana, so there has to be something to it, and there is, its an awesome movie all the way around. Yes, its chock full of Gunfire, blood, and a whopping 218 "f-bombs", but its all necessary to tell such an astounding story. The platinum edition is loaded with two discs full of goodies, including a scorecard that counts f words and bullets fired. It also has a making of the film and newly released video game, as well as a hilarious montage comparing the theatrical and television versions of the film. I've rambled on enough, all the rappers on earth and a bajillion other fans cant be wrong, get this movie, meng!!!

Scarface.. The world chico, and everything in it

Created: 11/11/09
This is a great movie one of the best rags to riches and tragic hero movies of all time. Set in the time of mass Cuban refugees coming to Miami, Antonio Montana among them comes with the idea of making it big and pursuing the dream of riches. Working his way up the ranks in dog eat dog world he makes it but as all heroes he reached a point of insecurity and instability he built his empire he slowly watched its demise. The world is yours...

excellent picture quality and sound

Created: 04/05/07
I was planning on buying Scarface on DVD when I heard that a newly restored version would be available. So I waited until this Platinum edition came out. It was worth the wait. The picture quality and sound were excellent. The extras were pretty good. In the DVD De Palma mentioned that some parts of a scene had been filmed but were intentionally left out to enhance the effect of that scene-- in particular the chainsaw in the bathroom scene. I wished they had put these shots in the extras part of the DVD. On the whole, this is a great DVD.
