Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (DVD, 2004, Widescreen)

Raja Gosnell, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar|Theatrical release: 2004 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

The gang from Mystery, Inc. is riding high as the focus of the first exhibit at the new Coolsonian Criminology Museum. But just as Fred (Freddie Prinze, Jr.), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Velma (Linda Cardellini), Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), and their canine companion Scooby Doo are basking in the spotlight, their past comes backs to haunt them--literally. Suddenly, the villains that the team has unmasked in the past have returned. This time around, a monster machine is producing Captain Cutler's Ghost, the 10,000 Volt Ghost, the Pterodactyl Ghost, Miner 49er, and others. But who is behind this dastardly deed? Is it the former Black Knight Ghost (Peter Boyle)? Or television reporter Heather Jasper-Howe (Alicia Silverstone)? Or perhaps the curator of the museum who makes Velma's heart flutter, mild-mannered Patrick Wisely (Seth Green)? As the gang tries to solve this latest mystery--and salvage their sullied reputation--they each face their own boundaries: Daphne strives to be more than just a pretty face; Fred discovers his softer side; Velma finds that feelings can be just as powerful as facts; and Shaggy and Scooby vow to be better detectives. Raja Gosnell directed this live-action feature based on the classic Hanna Barbera cartoon.

My toddler is a huge fan of Scooby Doo...and happened to come across this movie on television. Prior to this, I had heard that this movie was not the best film adaptation of a cartoon - but she loved the movie, we also enjoyed it so purchase it we did!
This movie has a number of big 'teen audience' stars - Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddy Prince Junior, Matthew Lillard, Seth Green and ER's Linda Cardenelli; they all work well in the roles of the regular Scooby Characters...though our title character himself is an animation / costumed icon - but they worked hard to make him look real and at place in the movie!!
This movie is fun as it brings to life all the 'monsters' that have featured in the cartoon....when our gang - collectively Mystery Inc, open a museum detailing their past foes, strange things start happening and the monsters start reappearing and threatening to take over the City.
On top of these concerns, the local media reporter seems to be out to cause trouble for our gang by careful editing of her interviews which suggest Mystery Inc do not care about the City or its people!
This is grounds for a fun film, with clever animation combining with true film footage! It can be silly and cheesy - but hey, that's always been part of the Scooby Doo cartoons. Our toddler can sit through this again and again though some of the monster scenes may be a tad too intense for the younger viewer. As parents, we can actually say we enjoy this and we pleasantly surprised!

Scooby Doo 2 on DVD

"Can I watch 'cooby Doo?" says my cousin's son when they visit. I was watching him during the day for a few weeks and got tired of watching the first one back to back. I bought this one to have some variety.
This movie was alright for an easy escape. It had some easy laughs and the story didn't require much thought. I thought the CGI was too obvious, but my cousin's son shielded his eyes when the monsters did something scary.
I did enjoy the nostalgia. This movie has a lot more connections to the original cartoons; which I did watch as a kid. There was also some jokes and action scenes that I liked. Shaggy feeling left out because the gang was having a montage without him and Scooby was probably my favorite joke and Scooby sliding around with the fire extinguisher (although very fake) was enjoyable on some levels.
It was nice to take a break from the mature themes and language of today's "comedies".
I haven't watched the special features yet (by the time I got it, we weren't watching the kid as long as we had been).

Scooby Doo 2--good just not as perfect as the 1st.

If you loved the 1st Scooby Doo, you may only like this one. The 1st is usually the best and this holds true here. My kids are 2 and 3 and I'm not sure if they ever blinked during the movie. They truly love Scooby as do I but the story line in this one was a little cheesier. It held my attention but I would not have lost much if I went and did the dishes either. A lot of cute, funny scenes with the monster chases. And I have to say that Matthew Lilard was the best and only choice to portray Shaggy! Bravo! Although I may not have given this one a perfect 10, I will still go see another Scooby if one ever comes out. Love ya Scooby Doo!
