The Scorpion King (DVD, 2002, Widescreen)

Chuck Russell, Michael Clarke Duncan|Theatrical release: 2002 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Wrestler-turned-actor The Rock gets his first starring role with THE SCORPION KING. A prequel to Stephen Sommers' wildly successful THE MUMMY (1999) and THE MUMMY RETURNS (2001), THE SCORPION KING tells the action-packed story of Mathayus (Rock), an Akkadian assassin who is the only man strong enough to destroy the vile Memnon (Steven Brand). Memnon, a power hungry warlord, uses the prescience of Cassandra (Kelly Hu), a beautiful seer, to ensure an endless succession of victories. Understanding that to defeat Memnon one must first eliminate Cassandra, Mathayus journeys to Gomorrah to infiltrate Memnon's palace and kill Cassandra. But when he lays eyes on the sultry beauty, he is unable to take her life. It isn't long before sparks begin flying and Cassandra is using her powers to aid Mathayus and his cohorts, including the bumbling Arpid (Grant Heslov), and Balthazar (Michael Clark Duncan), a powerful tribe leader who is also looking for a way to end Memnon's reign. Ignoring a vision from Cassandra that predicts his death, Mathayus charges into battle nonetheless, hoping to silence Memnon once and for all. Playing the sensitive, courageous hero, The Rock proves that his appeal is not only relegated to the small screen.

A Must-See for any fans of the Rock!!!

Having been a WWF aficionado in my teens and early adulthood, I am well acquainted with Mr. Dwayne Johnson, better known to the world-at-large as the megastar wrestlar, The Rock.

Some of you might ask- well he was a good wrestler, and we all know that wrestling is for the most part staged- but does he have acting chops? Sadly, that question is not answered by this film- for me, the Scorpion King was just a Dark Ages version of the Rock. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't horribly acted- the movie itself is short on story, said story being used to propel the movie towards the action pieces. The action is intense and pulse pounding and the Rock does a credible job as an action superstar; he has since gone on to expand is repertoire and is what I would consider to be a credible actor.

Fans of the Mummy may be saddened that their titular character makes no appearances here, but that is explained by the Rock's character having existed as a man sometime prior to the events of the Mummy (which makes sense since that movie is set in the era of the Roaring Twenties, that is, the 1920's for you neophytes).

So, in short- this movie is big on action sequences and calamitous battles, and light on story and romantic elements making it the quintessential popcorn blockbuster. Definitely worth the rental fee and if you're a fan of the Rock, a decent purchase as well. If you're married like I am, your wife is more than likely a fan of the Rock so you really can't go wrong. Enjoy!

It appears The Scorpion King is indirectly connected to the movies The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, although it is independent of these movies: you need not see these two movies to understand the plot of this show.

It is a fantasy action movie occurring in Egypt before the rein of the Pharohs. The Scorpion King [the assassin] is involved in [action] duels in an effort to stop marauding forces headed by Memnon [the Conqueror-king]. Mormon's success was based on the predictions by the Sorceress. The Scorpion King was hired as an assassin to get rid of this Sorceress.

I liked the extravagant sets and background of this high-budget movie. There are meticulous details in each scene and abundant special effects. And I like the sword-fighting action throughout the movie -- this definitely an action movie concentrating om the fighting skills of The Scorpion King. I rate this movie as a well-written good to excellent. My disk also featured helpful commentaries, explanations, and out-takes.

Ridiculous movie

If you expecting to see a sequel to The Mummy or The Mummy Returns, this isn't it, but it's still worth seeing at least once in its own right.

Even though it's a spin-off of the Mummy franchise, Scorpion King has virtually none of the Mummy's ingredients in it. This movie is less about adventure and mystery and more about action and the Rock. Granted, this movie isn't gonna be Hamlet and it certainly doesn't try to be. Kelly Hu is gorgeous, but the performances are average in an average screenplay.

Good start for the rock from the small screen to the big screen and a great prelude to the mummy and the mummy returns. A little different from both of the mummy movies but still keeps you interested and watching the movie to the end. A good movie with a lot of action.
