The Screwtape Letters: With Screwtape Proposes a Toast by C. S. Lewis (2001, Paperback)

Author: C.S. Lewis | Publisher: Harperone | Language: English

Product description

Synopsis
Originally serially published in the Guardian during the Nazi blitz of London, THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS takes the form of 31 letters written by a devil named Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, giving advice on the means by which to make Wormwood's "patient" lose faith in God (referred to only as "the enemy"). For Screwtape, the road to hell ("our father's house") is paved not with great sins but rather with petty selfishness, pride, and idleness. Hell is imagined not as a grandiose inferno but as an insidious bureaucracy where the focus is always on the trivial, the slight, and the self rather than on the glory of God. A masterpiece of Christian literature that is also a delightful comedy, THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS has remained one of C.S. Lewis's most beloved books.

Eye-Opening Christian Experience

Created: 05/09/08
I read this book myself a couple of years ago. It was an amazing eye-opening view of the effectiveness of Christians from the devil's and demons' perspective. My son is a new Christian and is not yet sanctified. He is full of opinions, as most young men are; but most are not biblical. Discussing theology with him is a miserable experience; he desires to debate and will not be proven incorrect even when he is.

While he has never been much of a reader, he has been engrossed in THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS. He has carried the book with him everywhere he's gone. He has become enlightened to the seriousness of what it means to be an effective Christian, an effective witness, to be set apart from the world for the purposes of God. The book makes it clear as to the importance of "enduring to the end to be saved".

He has come to realize that his opinions are not the ultimate say in life. God's word is true and real. And the worldly things we, as Christians, take lightly, are actually very serious matters in the spiritual realm.

Have we excused lying? Have we quit praying? Have we been indulging in sexual sin? Are we witnessing or remaining quiet out of fear of being considered "intolerant" or "politically incorrect". The devil rejoices every time we do not heed the directives and precepts in the word of God. There is demonic victory in the spiritual realm when we make excuses for sin. Do we keep a "short list" with God? Or has it been so long since we sought out His will, wisdom and help, or worshipped Him in spirit and truth, or acknowledged that it is He who gives us our breathe from one minute to the next?

Jesus is real. And we can live in victory with the power of the Holy Spirit daily. Or, we can, by apathy, serve satan daily. The choice is ours.

C.S. Lewis brings the truths and urgency of daily service to the Lord into astonishingly clear view for the believer in THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS.

I believe that true believers who read this book will never look at the blood of Jesus the same again. It is not a light thing when we cross the blood line to indulge in the sins of the world and the sins of the flesh. Directly, or indirectly, we are serving spiritual world, whether for Christ, or against Him when we do that.

Read THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS to experience a spiritual enlightenment like you haven't known since you received Christ as your savior!

Hilarious view of tempatation and sin

Created: 25/12/05
This fine collection of letters "discovered" by C.S. Lewis takes a unique view of temptations.

The letters are from an uncle (a devil) to his nephew (a younger devil), advising him on the best tactics for tempting humanity. The stories are always funny and revealing about human nature.

Lewis is better known for the Chronicles of Narnia - especially because of the recent films. But I enjoyed this little book better than all of the Narnia books.

The Screwtape Letters will entertain anyone regardless of faith -- and provides excellent material for discussion.

Excellent book!

I really like this book as it gives a true depiction of how satan tries to deceive us. It is written from a demon's propesctive of trying to deceive a christian young man and the thoughts he tries to plant in his mind. Excellent book!

immature Christians

This is a wonderful book, but can be distressing to young Christians. I think C.S Lewis masterfully used his strong faith and his own weakness to create the letters between Screwtape and his nephew Wormwood. I realize I am a patient as are we all and I hope Wormwood and his others fail to take me away or you away from the enemy.

The Screwtape Letters

Created: 01/02/08
C.S. Lewis says, making fun of the devil drives him crazy and the Screwtape Letters do just that. "Screwtape" is the undersecretary to the devil, and "Wormwood" is his nephew who is a "bumbling and " unskilled" apprentice tempter to the Christians. Some letters are comical and some are more serious. Some tell us how the devil can trick and deceive us out of our Christianity.
