The obvious flip-side of this is that the artist doesn't get to enjoy the fruits of his labors. On SECOND-HAND SMOKE, the surviving Sublime members and long-time collaborator Miguel gather together some of their earliest demos along with more recent out-takes in a final tribute to their late leader, drug casualty Brad Nowell.Comparing the earliest work on this release to the later hits, it's striking how far Nowell's songwriting had progressed. The band was just beginning to synthesize its diverse influences into something that was instantly recognizable as Sublime. The early songs range from the straight pop of "New Realization" to reggae ("Don't Push") to the blend of ska and hip hop that was their signature ("Garbage Grove"). On "April 29th 1992 (Leary)," Nowell explores the real motivation behind the LA riots from the partly-humorous, partly-serious point-of-view that would characterize the bulk of his work. One can only wonder how far Nowell would have taken his music had he not passed away just as he was entering his prime.

Editorial Reviews
...Sublime's own evolution from beer-bash trio to sonic experimentalists is...evident. By the end of this chronologically sequenced set, they're mixing up Peter Tosh instrumentals, duetting with pal Gwen Stefani, and concocting soulful pop-reggae...

Sublime:Second Hand Smoke (sublime watered down)

Created: 05/09/07
When Miguel put this album together(this is a compilation album)he must have had some pressure from the record company or producers to put out something more "Radio friendly" or commercial because the whole album consists of tame versions of some of the classics off of "40 oz. to freedom" and some other even tamer stuff.I personally came to know and love Sublime by thier irreverent and raw style which this release sadly lacks! In the albums favor, there are some good reggae grooves and a really cool duet with Bradley and Gwen Stefani on "Saw Red". All in all it's listenable, but doesn't live up to the early stuff that I know you like if you are reading this. If you want Sublime that you can play with your kids in the room then this is it.

A pretty chill vibe on this cd..normally I love the punk/fast-paced side of Sublime, but this is actually my 2nd or 1st fav Sublime album...some people think the songs all sound too similar, but this is the cd that REALLY got me crazy into Sublime.
