Movie synopsis

A housewife with little knowledge of horse-racing fosters one of the greatest race horses of all time as the story of the 1973 Triple Crown winner comes to the screen in this inspirational underdog drama based on the novel SECRETARIAT: THE MAKING OF A CHAMPION by William Nack and starring Diane Lane and John Malkovich. Penny Chenery (Lane) is a devoted mother and housewife whose ailing father is the proprietor of Meadow Stables in Virginia. When her father becomes too ill to tend to his horses, Penny agrees to take over the stables despite her inexperience. Desperate, she turns to veteran horse trainer Lucien Laurin (Malkovich) to help show her the ropes. Up to this point, horse racing has been a decidedly male-dominated sport. But with Lucien's help, Penny prepares to prove that gender has no bearing on one's ability to breed a fast race horse. As Secretariat blasts out of the gates to leave his competition in the dust, the whole world watches in amazement, and a legend is born.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"Lane, in a series of wigs to portray the blond Penny Tweedy, holds the film together with a sturdy performance that suggests, in moments, a mystical connection between horse and owner."

"[With] a strong and satisfying performance by Diane Lane....She is an actress with an instinct for honesty, someone incapable of false moves, and her restrained focused, performance as Chenery is a graceful stabilizing force here."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (10/08/2010)

4 stars out of 4 -- "It is a great film about greatness, the story of the horse and the no less brave woman who had faith in him."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (10/06/2009)

Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (10/08/2010)

Secretariat - Loved this movie

Good thing this is on DVD. If it was on tape, I would have worn it out by now. The movie is fabulous and engrossing right from the first frame, in my opinion. I love horses and I was pregnant with my daughter in 1973 (she was born in Nov.) and followed Secretariat's rise to fame that year as if he was a rock star..lol. I tease her that her love for horses came about because of Secretariat.

How can you know the outcome of a movie and still find it totally thrilling? The only thing I didn't like was... right at the end.. when Secretariat is coming around the last turn and suddenly this hokie music starts up. What was that about? I love movie theme songs.. Star Wars, Ben Hur, Gladiator, Midway etc. It should have been a grand, heart-stopping finale, instead... well, you will see. I think the director/producer.. whoever... sure missed the boat and an opportunity to have the audience on their feet, cheering.

Kudos to the casting people. Diane Lane - perfect, John Malkovich - perfect, Miss Hamm - perfect, the jocky - perfect.

Don't miss the bonus feature, whatever you do. I've watched the movie at least six times over the last few days, but I'll betcha I have seen the bonus feature 'Heart of a Champion' twice that many times.

This is a wonderful movie for the whole family. Nothing embarrassing here, unlike most modern movies.

My only other complaint (and if I missed it, sorry) is that no credit was given to the horse(s) that played Secretariat. In the 'Black Stallion', credit was given to a wonderful black Arabian named 'Cass-ole' (if memory serves). This ommision is a shame and makes me the more curious.

This is a movie about a singular animal athlete, the likes of which we may never see again. If you like animals and 'feel good' movies, you won't regret spending the money for this DVD.

I loved this movie. It is something that once can sit down and watch with anyone without being embarassed with foul language or sex scenes. Further it teaches that one (and specifically a woman) can not only stand up for their beliefs but also keep their ethics, stand up to the system and WIN! This is something that our young people (and many adults) so desperately need to learn and put into practice to overcome peer pressure. In addition to lessons contained, the acting was excellent and the race scenes were THRILLING! Mr. Malcovich was especially good and Miss Lane was also wonderful. The horses used in the movie were well conditioned and beautifully presented. It no doubt took a great deal of preparation and talent to make everything come across realistically and to appear effortless (although much effort was involved). I remember watching Secretariat on TV win the Belmont as a teen. Although my knowledge of racing was limited; still I knew that I has witnessed something very special that day. Seeing it portrayed again in the movie still made me hold my breath even though I knew the outcome and the records that this wonderful horse broke and holds to this day. Lastly, I was very pleased to see the passage from the book of Job quoted in the movie. It complimented the theme and sub-themes of the movie and was beautifully poetic and appropo. It is encouraging to see those not afraid to stand up for their principles or beliefs~whatever they may be.

Secretariat (DVD, 2011)

Of course, I remember when the real Secretariat won the Triple Crown and how excited every one in the nation was, having a new hero. The country needed a diverson and the story of a horse that had been passed over was a fairy tale with a happy ending. The owner of the horse was a bit too prim for my taste, but she was able to relay to her children that a woman's worth was not just in
housekeeping. The racing scenes were particularly exciting and the thrill of seeing Secretariat start to run and gain on the other horse was a rush all the way to the finish line.
If anything the story was just a little too perfect for real life, but we all know it did happen and it was not just a fairy tale.

I bought this movie on ebay, it was previously viewed, the seller was precise in the description and I got exactly what I paid for, which I might add I couldn't find this movie anywhere for this price. The movie is wonderful, it really shows the life of Secretariat, his wins and loses. What an awesome family movie, the children loved it and I must add so did I. Mrs. Tweedy (Chaney) is a remarkable woman with strength and charisma, Secretariat is truly a legend. I remember watching him on T.V. when I was a kid and I loved him then and now as an adult he is by far the best race horse who ever lived. This movie is a great family movie and disney really brings out all the things that made him famous. My daughter and I went to the movies and saw this movie when it first came out, but had to have it for our collection. Thats why I purchased it. This is a must see movie for all kids and adults. It shows that in this day and time, when times get tough don't give up keep fighting for what you believe in. It just might lead you to the road of victory.

Secretariat - The Movie

Created: 28/02/11
Not a rags to riches movie, but rather a follow your heart no matter what movie. Believe in your dreams and they will come true. Great movie for the family and to inspire what most people don't have a lot of today, hope. Since it is a true story, many of us can remember seeing Secretariat actually run the Triple Crown. It is just as great the second time around (or third).

If you like horses, and heart warming stories, you will love this movie. Just turn off the phone, curl up with a bowl of popcorn and your kids, then relax and enjoy.
