Movie synopsis

Adventure and horror merge in this morbid tale of two 18th century grave robbers who make it their mission to hunt down the undead abominations that refuse to accept their rightful place in the ground. Arrested by towering holy man Father Duffy (Ron Perlman) and threatened with the guillotine for robbing graves with his mentor, Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden), apprentice ghoul Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) agrees to make a full confession in exchange for a steady flow of whiskey. Arthur's story begins when he was just a young boy stealing jewelry from corpses in order to eat. Later, Arthur formed a partnership with Willie, and the pair went to work ensuring the walking dead learned to rest in peace. Now, with the specter of death looming ever closer, Arthur agrees to tell his tale to the very man charged with deciding his ultimate fate.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"I SELL THE DEAD is fairly congenial, tracking the rascally adventures of two not-always-bright fellows....[The] low budget is well-deployed, with a few good locations and some skillful makeup effects..." -- Grade: B
A.V. Club - Noel Murray (08/06/2009)

"A pastiche of old-fashioned horror flicks and an homage to the same, I SELL THE DEAD recalls the kind of frightful diversions that were a staple on the television show 'Chiller Theater.'"
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (08/07/2009)

Was pleasantly surprised by this film. As a fan of low budget monster and horror films this one exceeded my expatiations. The comedy is dark and considerably more subtle than in 'Shaun Of The Dead' a personal fave of ours. The gore is actually kept to a minimum and in the spirit of true classic horror films, most of the killing is done off screen.

This film has an interesting timeline, it begins with the beheading by guillotine of Willie Grimes, one of the main characters in the story. Then it proceeds to back tell the story from the perspective of Arthur Blake, Willie's apprentice. Including their entry to this field of employment by the Dr. Vernon Quint, who meets a very fitting end with a character that also answers an age old question I have had about vampires. (sorry, no spoilers here!) many more colorful characters are introduced through Arthur's antidotes and it all wraps up into a fun ending that will have you 2nd guessing the outcome.

I ordered this movie from the UK, and it turns out the DVD was made in Mexico and comes with a full color illustrated novel. (in the old days we just called them Comic Books) I'd believed it was made in London judging from the look of it. Watch the making of featurette for the true location, You'll be surprised to discover where it was actually filmed.

All in all, a fun little movie destined to become a Halloween classic in our home.

Grave robbers with a twist

Created: 08/11/10
Saw this on satellite and had to get it for my collection. Two grave robbers out to make a buck (or a crown)encounter some of the craziest characters from aliens to zombies and experience some of the strangest adventures from the graveyard to secluded islands. C'mon, what could ever scare a zombie?? How can you mess with a vampire and still live?? The tongue-in-cheek humor is non-stop and is a must see for any horror fan.

Good to watch, but not for your next wild party.

The story starts off a bit slowly and for people accustomed to thunderous action and dazzeling fight scenes, the entire movie drags along with the exception of a few funny scenes with the undead.

To folks introduced to a British sense of humor and slang words through Harry Potter, this movie is an interesting educational piece for those who can pay attention to the details.
