SENSE AND SENSIBILTY JANE AUSTIN DVD, MOVIE
Created: 14/05/08
Sadly, I missed the second half of the recent (and most wonderful) PBS adaptation of this timeless classic. I was desperate to know how the story ends because I have never read the novel. I turned to my trusted Ebay and was not disappointed. I found and purchased this DVD (a SUPER DEAL) after finding it not available at the video store. The cast and acting is superb! The scenery made me homesick for the UK where I lived and worked more than 17 years. Emma Thompson's script was perfect in detail, costume and story telling. I am sorry I never read Austin because, as with Shakespeare, it is amazing how humans evolve in the world of technology and in some social ways (for good or ill). However, in other important human ways nothing changes thrugh the ages, such as our deep seated human emotions of love, longing and loss! This is a superb movie, have watched it twice already to take in the details again the second time around. It is a true shame to refer to it as a "Chick Flick" when the observations of love, longing and loss are universal between men and women and so timeless too. This is an extremely literate and entertaining exploration of human emotion. Enjoy!

A Wonderful Film~

This movie is wonderful! The only thing that bugged me was Hugh Grant as Edward Ferrars. He stuck out like a sore thumb and every time he entered a room you got the impression of some timid school boy about to be punished. Emma Thompson & Kate Winslet were perfect as sisters Elinor & Marianne Dashwood. I liked that in the movie they seemed a little older than they are in the book. Alan Rickman was really good as Col. Brandon and I loved the part where he watched Marianne sing and play the piano. A Great movie to see if you enjoy period films or anything from the genius of Jane Austen.

Sense and sensibility is about character. Its about those that are evil wicked and cruel despite the seeming graces and superficial charms of civility, and it is about goodness and idealism and beauty for which there is no equal on earth. In this respect Emma Thompson saves the day not only in respect of this movie but rather as a shining beacon on this earth for those that wish to be the best we can as good souls, true christianly spirits in our terrestrial walk on this good earth bestowed by the good lord for those of his own.
The balance between the desire for being sensible as it were while giving positive vent to healthy emotions and doing so in a way that keeps you sane good decent and certainly wise is in fact the ultimate study of the movie.
In this respect we have no better teacher than our lovely dear Emma. shes the best at al there is in this respect, her speech at the golden globe awards for her well deserved award for this movie said it all. Her articulation prowess, her captivating charm her immense beauty and her most lovely lovely spirit are in fact a wake up call for those who as yet only look like she does, yet have so much potential if they will only accept her as their queen and learn to be like her. That would make for a lovely world, one in which Id want to have a place and to make my own way having contributed to the fullest in my own right for Emma.

Sense and Sensibility directed by Ang Lee
Created: 03/11/10
Wonderful DVD. Extra Features include another scene between Elinor and Edward Ferras, after their engagement. Audio tracks include Ang Lee's directors commentaries and, Emma Thompson's comments as the screenwriter. A priceless gem of a feature is the inclusion of Emma Thompson's acceptance speech for Best Screenplay Adaptation at the Golden Globes; which she delivers as though penned by "Jane Austen" herself. Emma Thompson is an accomplished writer, and a brilliant actress. Ang Lee proves himself yet again to be a sensitive director with the gift of telling a highly nuanced story that delivers great emotional impact.

I first saw this movie on PBS station and was stunned by its beauty and the script. I HAD to have it for myself! I could hardly wait for it to come and I have watched it 5 times already (I RARELY watch a movie more than twice) and even watched it again on t.v. before my copy arrived. I just can't get enough of this beauty of a movie. The scenery! The period homes it was shot in! Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet can hardly be said enough about. SUPERB!! A glorious movie. Great insight into the restrictions of a woman living as a single being in those days. This movie never gets old and I enjoy it just as much each time I see it. BRAVO!!!
