Serenity - Closing the Firefly Series
Created: 21/05/10
This movie closes off the "Firefly" series. I got hooked on the humor of the space-western and the well played characters and situations. I strongly suggest that the series be watched first for background. There is a lot of action, and the film can stand alone but some of the characters were given short shrift to keep the movie moving. There is a concentration on "River", played by Summer Glau and Captain Malcolm Reynolds, played by Nathan Fillion. The witty writing leavens the occasionally pedantic plot and the first viewing has an epic quality well worth the price of admission. Saw this once on a rental and had to have a copy for my permanent collection and study.

Surprising good, with a little bit of comedy and action

I was never a fan of firefly the series before I saw this film. But after hearing about it and listening to somme of the music that came from the film I decided to give the film a try. Now I want to see the series just so I can learn the background of the characters a little more. Surprising the film was excellent and had a nice touch to it. The best part about the film was that it didn't have aliens and other stuff in that nature. It was just humans trying to survive in space and the normal outlaws here and there trying to make a living.
The film has a nice cast of characters, everyone doesn't seem to have anything in common, but they all just have that vibe that makes it work. Another thing I like was how there was comedy mixed with action, giving you a good laugh here and there. The special effects were pretty good too, the plot also had a nice pace to it flowing smoothly from begining to end. The best thing I liked was the music, it just has that little extra and its relaxing in a way. I've been looking for the soundtrack for the film, but so far no luck.
To sum up, I think this is an excellent film to add to your collection. The fact that it offers something different than the everyday sci fi films.

Serenity is an Action Packed Adventure
Created: 19/12/05
This is one incredible movie. No, you don't have to be familiar with the series to enjoy it, but the familiarity will make several moments in the movie that much more tragic. The action here is incredible, and unlike several of the Star Trek movies, the characters don't deviate from their series personnas. The emotional impact of several scenes is so intense it was hard to stay seated (a crash landing sequence can almost give you motion sickness). This brings a satisfying end to the storyline the original series had started. It's a shame the show never got to tell this story in its entirety. You can see where some parts of the movie are rushed in a way. Something that could have been stretched over weeks in a series had to be handled in minutes, and that robs it a little. But you have to applaud Whedon for being able to tie up all the loose ends he started with just two hours. Shame on the network for cancelling this, but congratulations to Whedon for giving the fans--both old and new--the ending the show deserved. Heroes will shine, and some will fall, but Serenity will live on.
Now bring the show back!

Worthy Hugo winner
Created: 08/02/07
SERENITY is a rare, story-driven science fiction film, with an enjoyable backstory from the TV series FIREFLY. Its characters are entertaining and the future in which it's set is fascinating. The movie won science fiction fandom's Hugo Award as the best drama (of over 90 minutes) of 2005; even following upon such earlier winners as 2001, ALIEN (and ALIENS), the three good STAR WARS films and the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, it's a worthy winner. Three word review? Lotsa fun. (That's two words.)

Shiney!

This movie was an excellent addition to the Firefly series. I was really pleased that Joss Whedon was able to make a movie installment for the series since they weren't able to finish the series since it was cancelled.
You don't have to see the series first in order to enjoy it, but it certainly helps you understand each character better if you do.
This movie ties up a lot of loose ends for characters, and ends some characters. I really wish we would have learned more about Book, I was really curious about his past, but it didn't talk about it.
If you enjoyed the series, or if you are a sci-fi fan you'll enjoy this movie.
I recommend it to anyone.
