    Album Notes
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Doyle Bramhall II (guitar); Chris Stainton (piano); Steve Gadd (drums).Audio Mixer: Mick Guzauski.Director: Stephen Schible.Editor: Henry Stein.Photographer: Mister Toru Moriyama.During the filming of tour rehearsals that followed the release of Eric Clapton's acclaimed ME AND MR. JOHNSON, bassist Nathan East jokingly noted that many of the band's performances were "better than on the album." Clapton's longtime low-ender may have been right, as the resultant SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J provides the best of both worlds--the freshness of live interaction and the sound quality of a studio album. The differences between the two discs are sometimes striking, but often subtle. Clapton's vocals on "Milkcow's Calf Blues" are more forceful, Billy Preston's organ stabs on "Stop Breakin' Down Blues" just that much funkier. Of course, SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J (which comes paired with a lengthy documentary DVD featuring the practice sessions and interview footage) also includes several Robert Johnson songs not recorded for the ME AND MR. JOHNSON album. In addition to playing with his group, the English guitar legend tackles several pieces in tandem with guitarist Doyle Bramhall II (who adds a distinct Texas flair to Clapton's more Chicago-influenced style), and solo on acoustic guitar. Clapton's well-documented lifelong love of Johnson's music has never been clearer, as the music often reveals his undiminished sense of wide-eyed wonder about the enigmatic "King of the Delta Blues."

Clapton covers Robert Johnson with great vocals

    Created: 13/03/08
It was a given that the guitar playing on this DVD would be great. I hadn't expected the bonus of some great vocals as well. On several of the acoustic numbers particularly, Eric's voice is evocative and used in a more refined way than on anything prior by him. His voice is nearly as accomplished as his guitar playing. I've never cared for his, or anyone else's, attempts to sound like a black man, and he does that on one cut, but he more than redeems himself on others.
Clapton (in cinema verite style) shares his insights about Robert Johnson based on what can be learned from devoted study of the recordings and the little that is known about his life, including....the deal.
I also gained a great deal of respect for Doyle Bramhall II for his contribution to Sessions for Robert J. as second guitar.
If you like Clapton, the Blues, pretty guitars, Robert Johnson, Doyle Bramhall II, or Boogie music, I think you'll like this DVD. I recommend that you get the DVD/CD that come packaged together.
