Movie synopsis

Set in the underground world of Los Angeles card sharks and gamblers, this slick neo-noir is a gripping ensemble drama that pays homage to hard-boiled heist directors like Mamet and Scorsese. SHADE, a gambling term for deception and trickery, revolves around a ring of small-time hustlers with dreams of the big payoff. Tiffany (Thandie Newton) is a beautiful and calculating swindler who works together with her partner Charlie (Gabriel Byrne) in nickel-and-dime schemes. But when one card shark, The Dean (Sylvester Stallone), seems to be unbeatable, they devise a scheme to topple his flawless run. They recruit Tiffany's old flame, Vernon (Stuart Townsend) a card mechanic and sleight-of-hand genius and hustler Jennings (Jamie Foxx) to maneuver their way on to The Dean's poker table. But all is not what it seems in this twisting and turning thriller: deception abounds. Secret love affairs and allegiances are kindled, and The Dean, whom everyone is trying to hustle, plays a dirty game with the help of his ex-girlfriend, Eve (Melanie Griffith). In a game of who's cheating whom, each player becomes a pawn in another's swindle. Debut writer-director Damian Nieman films the card tricks with flair, making the poker-faced manipulations visible to the viewer and adding to the high stakes tension of the film.

Excellent Movie, New Favorite, Full Of Twists!

Created: 09/06/08
I love the cast of this movie, which includes: Stuart Townsend, Sylvester Stallone, Melanie Griffith, Jamie Foxx, Thandie Newton & Gabriel Byrne.
I like the fact that it's a poker film and introduces to the audience the various kinds of people who would be involved in a set-up to win a large sum of money from one person or more.

I also like the fact that Stallone branches out to other roles, instead of only playing a macho character such as Rambo or Rocky. I think he did extremely well playing a card sharp character in this movie, which is the latest target of a group of three to try and beat at a poker game, to make one of the group a huge name and thus call himself "The Dean". However, there's a big surprise for one of the prospect's associates, which he never anticipated.

The only thing that I don't like is the fact that Jamie Foxx's character is killed early on in the movie, because I thought he'd play a bigger role (one that lasts longer). But his character is important to some degree, as I saw in the film during a discussion about his death between two characters.

I recommend this movie to anyone who likes films involving poker, stories, unique characters, action, neo-noir crime dramas with twists & turns.

Not so good..

I love watching poker matches on tv and was excited to hear about this movie. I think I only got about half way through it before I turned it off. While there are some cool card "tricks", that was about it. No good music, story line was a little off to me and the dialog just wasn't doing anything for me.

Decent Poker movie. GREAT list of Actors, but was kind of low budget. And there was no Texas Hold'em. It was pretty much how to hustle in 5 Card Draw. Aint no "Rounders", but a descent poker movie. Would recomend WATCHING, but NOT BUYING.

Not Quite "Rounders"

Created: 11/09/09
This is an interesting poker flick, with the expected lot of plot twists and shady characters (no pun intended, seriously). Ultimately, none of the actors really shine or seem to put in thir best efforts. You'll be entertained, but, like I said, it's not quite "Rounders."
