SHADES covers 30 years of recording done by a myriad of line-ups. Deep Purple, named after Nino Tempo and April Stevens' version of the standard, started out as a psychedelic pop act before quickly evolving into a hard rock band characterized by keyboardist Jon Lord's classical tendencies and Ritchie Blackmore's over-the-top, pull-off arpeggio solos.Purple's most successful and popular line-up (Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan) spent the early '70s cultivating their hard rock credentials with landmark albums such as DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK, FIREBALL, and the granddaddy of 'em all, MACHINE HEAD. "Space Truckin'," "Speed King," "Highway Star," and of course "Smoke On The Water" are classic Purple triumphs populated by muscular riffs and potent decibels loathed by critics and adored by the public. Internal dissension led to future line-up changes that found Deep Purple becoming a base from which former and future members became part of groups ranging from Whitesnake and Rainbow to Black Sabbath and the Dixie Dregs.

Editorial Reviews
...SHADES is awesome, if you're metal enough to take four hours of relentless heavy riffs and arena-filling, headbanging classics. And if you're not, then it's time to beef up!

...While the latter-period stuff is depressingly formulaic, discs 2 and 3 showcase this once-vibrant band at the top of its early-'70s game... - Rating: B-

Must have collection by one of the best bands around.

Deep Purple has been one of my favorite bands since the early seventy's. I generaly don't like "greatest hits" collections. Usually if I like a band I'll like the complete albums the songs come from. But Deep Purples collections sometimes contain gems like live tracks, studio outtakes or, in this case, the hard to find single of Emmaretta. This was the primary reason I bought this set. Emmaretta is one of my favorite songs from Mk 1 Purple but is only available in such a set like this.

A excellent collection of Deep Purple tracks. It starts off from the beginning and ends pretty much around the time the band should have called it a career. All the different "Mark" line-ups are here. Talking about it is not going to get it sold, buy it and let the music do the talking!

Deep Purple "Shade" box set

"Shades". has all Deep Purple's classics, plus some great songs that aren't played on the radio. Very good box set without a bunch of worthless filler songs.

If you are searching for the music that rocked 60's,70's,80's and into the 90's look no further. All of Deep Purples greatest are here! This brings back all those memories you let fade into the foggy past of your younger days. Wait till you hear the first few chords of "My Woman from Tokyo" You'll see what I mean. This is a keeper!
