Movie synopsis

Hardboiled and at times incongruous, Lee Daniels's (MONSTER'S BALL) directorial debut sets out to smash stereotypes with a noirish crime thriller about loyalty, loss, love, and guilt. Cuba Gooding Jr. (MEN OF HONOR) and Helen Mirren (CALENDAR GIRLS) star as Mikey and Rose, a pair of contract killers. Once stepmother and son, they are now lovers as well as partners, and have decided to do one last job together before Rose leaves the business due to her terminal cancer. Brutal criminal Clayton (Stephen Dorff) has hired them to take care of members of his inner circle--including his pregnant wife, Vickie (Vanessa Ferlito, SPIDER MAN 2)--but when the pair goes to carry out the job, Vickie goes into labor and Rose suffers a crisis of conscience. Rose helps Vickie through the birth and adopts both mother and son, going into hiding and telling Clayton the job was done. The four briefly form a strange kind of family before illness, tragedy, and the past inevitably disturb their tenuous peace. The chemistry between Mirren and Gooding is intense and unforced, forming just one aspect of this great cast that also includes Joseph Gordon Levitt (BRICK) as a doctor who ministers to the criminal element, and Mo'nique as his demanding girlfriend. The film's gorgeous cinematography offsets the high violence quotient, which begins with an early scene involving a pool cue that audiences aren't likely to forget. SHADOWBOXER is a film that interests by virtue of its unusual casting, fast-paced story, and well-shot look.

2007 Best Actress Helen Mirren & Cuba Gooding, Jr. Star

Created: 21/05/07
The inseparable odd pair of contract killers Rose (Helen Mirren) & Mikey (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) cross boundary after boundary of US laws & ethics. That's what makes this movie so unique & intriguing. It's got quite an unusual plot!

Since Rose is dying, she's going on her last contract kill(s) with Mikey, her stepson. Once on the job, with four of their men targets already shot dead, Mikey is surprised when Rose refuses to kill a very pregnant target who goes into labor at the sight of Rose & her gun aimed her way. Instead of killing the primary target, Rose successfully delivers her baby.

Off the four, instead of two, go, into hiding. Sexual boundaries are crossed. Ethical boundaries are too. It's nearly comical that a once renowned hit woman spares another woman's & her newborn baby's lives. Rose has an alterior motive, though. That becomes apparent in the end.

If I give you any more details I'll ruin the intrigue of the boundary crossings. So I'll leave it saying that I feel they are the most significant part of this well acted, directed, and scripted film. The title "Shadowboxer," is quite fitting.

Horrible Movie! Absolutely Disturbing

And No I am not talking about the pool cue scene, I am talking about the incest (stepmother and stepson to me is incest), intimate scenes and nudity. This movie was truely gross. I can not believe Cuba Gooding Jr. sold himself out for a B-rate movie that should be in the porn section of the movie store. Not a good story line or anything. I am so surprised movies this bad exist. My Opinion in in less than five words - DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.

Aesthetically pleasing, very entertaining film.

This is really an astounding film for a first time director. Although the plot can be a bit over the top and unbelievable throughout, the absolute beauty of the shots are mesmorizing and you just can't look away. I personally hated Cuba Gooding Jr. before seeing this film, but his character is so sedate and refined that he's actually quite believable and enjoyable. And Dame Helen Mirren...who guarantees a film at least two stars simply for her presence is brillant as always.

Incestuous soft porn

Created: 26/01/11
This film has the independent feel, but gets a bit lost in itself. The action sequences were sporadic and the time between was filled with a strange romantic drama. I could have passed on the graphic nudity when it came to the incestuous relationship. Just not my cup of tea. Grade: C-
