Made to entertain - not to educate
Created: 24/03/10
I was hoping to get something more educational and scientific from a Discovery Channel production. While there is some information on research and new findings, everything is packaged in a dramatic Jaws theme (with wanna-be Steven Spielberg music - "da da. da da da da."). And the old terror-from-the-depths theme goes through literally all programs.
It has a good collection of footage, and does make the point of conservation through the commentary, but that is not supported by the quick cuts and dramatic undertone, nor by the amount of scenes with blood in the water.
The purpose of this series is clearly not to address the misconception we have about very poorly researched animals. The main goal is to entertain, and the entertainment is achieved by suspense, drama, and some gore. Better than Jaws, but not suited to overcome fear of the ocean. If you know a little bit about sharks, this series will not be able to teach you a lot. But if you just want to be entertained, and focus on the animals, it's a good collection of footage.

My 3 1/2 year old son likes sharkes so i figured i get him this dvd set to watch and he loves it. It has excellent video footage an very informational. also very interesting to watch. after watching all the chapters i have a much better understanding of sharks although i would never be next to a real one that close as the divers are. they actually show the bites and attacks and explains why sharks do what they do, its very graphic(in a good way) showing sharks in water. nothing to dislike about the dvd set.
