Movie synopsis

In writer-director Frank Darabont's THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover in the late 1940s. However, only Andy knows that he didn't commit the crimes. Sent to Shawshank Prison to do hard time, Andy--a taciturn banker in the outside world--has to learn to get by in the brutal, cutthroat confines of prison life. His quiet strength slowly earns the respect of his fellow inmates--most notably, Red (Morgan Freeman)--and even much of the prison staff. But Andy's seemingly stoic acceptance of his unjust imprisonment hides a fierce determination for freedom. This beautifully crafted movie features touching and sincere performances from the entire cast, with an uplifting message about humanity's indomitable spirit and the redemptive value of hope. Based on the novella RITA HAYWORTH AND SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION by Stephen King, Darabont's intriguing adaptation is easily one of the finest films of the 1990s.

Take two hours of your life to see this movie. Take four or eight or twelve to see it again and again, you won't be disappointed. It is no wonder The Shawshank Redemption sits comfortably at IMDb's #1 movie of all time spot.

Every single scene, line, and gesture in this film are all so absolutely necessary and perfect that it is impossible for any respectable critic or film buff to find something wrong or an area for improvement. The best part about this film is how differently the viewer understands it with each new time they watch it. Generally for most people seeing it for the first time they recognize Andy's (Tim Robbins) struggle to maintain hope and overcome his unfortunate conditions. Then you watch it again and see how the movie is really about Red (Morgan Freeman) and his struggle to find his purpose in life. It is only in the final segment that we see through Andy's cunning plans Red is faced with the same conflict as Brooks and has the opportunity to find the path of freedom lit by hope, which he most subconsciously desires.

One of the best movies of all time.

Anytime that I have ever asked someone if they liked this movie, they have ALL said yes. And I fully agree with them. This is the best acting I have ever seen by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. And that's saying alot considering they have both had numerous memorable roles throughout their respective careers. There are very few films where you become so involved in it that you actually feel like you yourself ARE the main character, but this is one of those films. It is easy to relate to Tim Robbins character. It is easy to cheer him on through out this movie. And the friendship that he develops with Morgan Freeman's character is very powerful. A friendship that everyone on earth should experience. <p>

This movie has a deep message but is still fun to watch. It has a little bit of everything in it, including humor, action and drama. The main message in this film is to embrace change and don't ever give up especially if you know you're right, never give up the faith. This movie should be mandatory watching for our High School students. They deserve a refreshing POSITIVE message.
