Publisher's Note
The Shelters of Stone opens as Ayla and Jondalar, along with their animal friends, Wolf, Whinney, and Racer, complete their epic journey across Europe and are greeted by Jondalar’s people: the Zelandonii. The people of the Ninth Cave of the Zelandonii fascinate Ayla. Their clothes, customs, artifacts, even their homes—formed in great cliffs of vertical limestone—are a source of wonder to her. And in the woman Zelandoni, the spiritual leader of the Ninth Cave
(and the one who initiated Jondalar into the Gift of Pleasure), she meets a fellow healer with whom to share her knowledge and skills.

But as Ayla and Jondalar prepare for the formal mating at the Summer Meeting, there are difficulties. Not all the Zelandonii are welcoming. Some fear Ayla’s unfamiliar ways and abhor her relationship with those they call flatheads and she calls Clan. Some even oppose her mating with Jondalar, and make their displeasure known. Ayla has to call on all her skills, intelligence, knowledge, and instincts to find her way in this complicated society, to prepare for the birth of her child, and to decide whether she will accept new challenges and play a significant role in the destiny of the Zelandonii.

Jean Auel is at her very best in this superbly textured creation of a prehistoric society. The Shelters of Stone is a sweeping story of love and danger, with all the wonderful detail—based on meticulous research— that makes her novels unique. It is a triumphant continuation of the Earth’s Children® saga that began with The Clan of the Cave Bear. And it includes an amazing rhythmic poem that describes the birth of Earth’s Children and plays its own role in the narrative of The Shelters of Stone.

THE SHELTER OF STONE By JEAN M AUEL

I BOUGHT THE SIGNED FIRST ADDITION COPY OF THE SHELTER OF STONE BY JEAN AUEL BECAUSE I LOVED THE FIRST FOUR BOOKS IN THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR STORIES I HAD WANTED TO READ THEM FOR A VERY LONG TIME AND NEVER GO THE OPPORTUNITY UNTIL JUST RECENTLY. WHEN I HEARD SHE HAD WRITTEN A FIFTH BOOK I KNEW I HAD TO HAVE IT. THE SHELTER OF STONE HAS NOT DISAPPOINTED YET. AT THIS TIME I AM ONLY ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH BUT I HAVE TO SAY IT, LIKE THE FIRST FOUR, IS ONE OF THE BEST STORIES I HAVE EVER READ. I WILL TREASURE THIS BOOK FOR YEARS TO COME AND WOULD LIKE VERY MUCH TO COLLECT SIGNED COPIES OF THE HOLE SERIES.

I am a huge Jean Auel fan! I cant wait for her new book to come out! No matter how many times Ive read these books, I never get tired of them! They arent just a regular romance novel. They are so detailed about the way people lived in those days and the customs of all the different people. It is truly an enthralling story:)

Ayla and Jondalar's Journey back to his home land is exceptionally diversified in diferences and finally acceptance. Any person who has read the first 4 books would understand The Earth Children more by reading Shelters os Stone.

I have read all of the books in the series by Jean Auel over the years and wanted to have them in the hardback versions as well as in the paperback version to keep both in my house and in my motor home; the hardback version has an easier to read print, a bit larger and the book is more durable, I can donate the copies to my local library when I am not in need of them or store them to be read again. The books are a romantic fantasy about prehistoric times and thus are of a mysterious era in human history. I love to read and to compose music as these are whole brain activities which enrich me very much.
