Movie synopsis

SHOWTIME deftly combines clever satire and explosive action, taking the buddy cop movie in a new direction. Robert De Niro stars as Mitch Preston, a no-nonsense detective who makes headlines when he shoots the television camera right out of the hands of a meddlesome photographer during a bust. The department is sued for millions, but a slick producer (Rene Russo) drops the suit to force Mitch to star on the network's new reality series. Trey Sellars (Eddie Murphy), a struggling actor and incompetent patrolman, bamboozles his way into a plum role as Mitch's partner. Mitch is a better cop, but Trey knows a lot more about how to be a TV star. He even comes up with the show's catchphrase: "It's SHOWTIME!" In the film's funniest setpiece, William Shatner is brought in to teach Mitch and Trey how to master important TV cop procedures, like jumping on the hood of a car. Things get more serious as the celebrity cops track down a crazed criminal armed with a powerful new weapon. Director Tom Dey (SHANGHAI NOON) keeps things moving, and laces the action with reflexive humor. Murphy is in fine comic form, and has terrific chemistry with De Niro.

Showtime is the Reality-TV era's answer to Cop/Buddy movies like the Lethal Weapon series. When a dedicated detective (Robert De Niro) shoots a TV camera during a bust, the Network offers the LAPD a choice: A lawsuit, or the use of De Niro for a reality based show. The camera-shy de Niro is not thrilled, to say the least. And when he finds out that he will be partnered up with Trey "Ice Trey" Sellers, a frustrated (Bad!) Actor/Beat Cop, the fur starts to fly.
Murphy and De Niro are on the trail of a vicious Club Owner who is in posession of a batch of specially made guns; They fire such large rounds that they are capable of knocking down houses. You can imagine what they'll do to a bullet-proof vest...

Showtime has some really great action sequences; The climax was actually something that I had never seen before in a movie. Points for originality! The real selling point is the pairing of Eddie Murphy and Robert de Niro. The two are priceless when they are onscreen together, and there are more laugh-out-loud moments in this film than I could count. (Sequel, PLEASE!!!!) William Shatner plays himself in a small cameo: He's there to teach the guys how to act like TV Cops- Hood Jumping, Door Rolling, etc. Just the spectacle of seeing Shatner, Murphy & De Niro in the same scene is funny....

And make sure to stick around for the outtake reel after the film ends. Great stuff!

It's a really funny movie with big-time actors playing portraying their respective characters very well. Robert DeNiro is a tough, seasoned, no-nonsense detective and Eddie Murphy plays an attention-hungry rookie patrolman-wannabe actor, while Renee Russo portrays an ambitious TV producer looking to put the two cops in her new reality-TV show. Although Showtime doesn't have the most developed plot, it's still well worth the 90 minutes of laughter.

Great movie

Created: 10/01/10
It's the story of an actor (eddie murphy) and a real cop (robert deniro) who have to make a reality tv show together. It's a pretty funny movie, this was'nt eddie murphy funniest movie, but was one of the most funny movie deniro did, since we hardly ever see him in comdie movies. If you like cop comedie you'll like it.

Robert De Niro does a wonderful comedy!

This movie is lighthearted with a lot of humor and action! The plot is mostly believable, and always a lot of fun. I liked the witty banter between De Niro and Eddie Murphey. And they both gently poke fun at each other and themselves. Definatly worth watching. And aslo, the woman who plays Chase's assistant in the film is Robert De Niro's stepdaughter from his first marriage!

Nothing Particularly Great

Created: 03/06/09
It's just silly fun. Don't put a lot of faith in it just because there's De Niro and Murphy, simply enjoy the basic humor and lousy lines. This is the perfect flop movie that you find on TV when you're in the mood to watch nothing demanding.
