Movie synopsis

With SILK, director François Gerard (THIRTY TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD, THE RED VIOLIN) brings Alessandro Baricco's bestselling novel to sumptuous life. Michael Pitt stars as Herve Joncour, a Frenchman who lives in a small town that has hit hard times. A local silkworm magnate (Alfred Molina) stumbles upon a solution for his town's troubles, and enlists Herve to travel to a hidden corner of Japan in order to smuggle back a boundless supply of rare silkworms. Traveling in disguise so that he won't be exposed, Herve succeeds in his mission. Upon returning home, he reunites with his beautiful, supportive wife, Helene (Keira Knightley). While Herve and Helene have a loving relationship, their inability to produce a child creates an undercurrent of distance between them. This is compounded when Herve meets a beautiful concubine (Sei Ashina) during one of his subsequent journeys, sparking a passionate encounter that will haunt him for the rest of his life.Gerard's adaptation of Baricco's novel spans several continents and many years. The production is aided by the lush imagery of cinematographer Alain Dostie and the haunting score from acclaimed composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (THE LAST EMPEROR). Featuring yet another standout performance from Molina, SILK tells an epic tale of love and loss in the 19th century.

Silk (2008, DVD)

this was a decent love story that could have been a lot better. the movie focuses primarily on actor Michael Pitt and the secret attraction that he has for a Japanese girl on one of his several journeys to bring back silk worms to his village. but the movie leaves little to show on how Keira Knightley's character is and how she develops- this does however play an important role on the mystery of her character that eventually will reveal itself as the film concludes. most of the time Knightley's character is just seen as being saddened that she has to be parted from Pitt's character as he takes his leave. I did think that this movie did try to make Michael Pitt's physical character seem too close to emulating Brad Pitt's character from Legends of the Fall especially with the beard and the clothing. but if you have enough patience to watch the movie through, you'll also discover that some of the other characters to be interesting too. a good little love story that could have been a little more better.

Movie sucked

I LOVE almost any chick flick... but this one sucked.... keira knightly usually has great movies! and I love period movies... this movie is down there with atonement.... just bad taste and boring and unnecessary nudity and situations.

Silk 2008

The scenery was beautiful but the story seemed to drag at times. The stories at his home was doom and gloom bring the whole story to its knees. Rather than emphasising his struggle to succeed it shows the hero as a wayward weak lover failing to take a stand and dragging all around him down into his abyss

It made you think what the movie could be about

It was a love story. Looking at the dvd case gave a hint that was what the movie was about. I rated it a average movie because it never peak. It's story line just kept going which at some points made the movie seem a little long. The ending did tie the movie together. I purchased this dvd because of the actors in it. On a scale of 1 - 10 I would give it a 7.
