Glad I Bought It

I just got the machine today. It is as expected, and I believe I made a good investment. My reason for buying it is that I have a $1,000 machine which sews like a dream, but it cannot withstand constant sewing of draperies and other items that use heavy fabric. After a while it begins to jam and punctures the bobbin mechanism. It takes 2 to 3 wks. to repair at the shop, and then I get it back and in 2 wks. the same happens. I've been researching and find that expert mechanics will tell you that such a machine is being "abused" if you try to use it for heavy duty items constantly. It's not that you will break a needle or a part, you will break the machine. It will die. Well, I'm treating that baby with kid gloves. It sews beautifully as long as the fabrics are not too heavy.
I tried out the 4423 for a few hours. I am very experienced, so I believe I can judge the machine although I have not used it for very long. Yes, it's noisy, kind of "tinny" by comparison to my other machine. However, I paid so little for it on Ebay (new) that I can't expect it to perform like my very expensive model. What I appreciate the most is that it sure can handle heavy fabrics without hesitation. Any "regular" machine would die if it had to sew such materials and thicknesses. The stitching was beautiful without any hesitation on bumps. It uses the same kind of bobbins and needles as my other machine, so that's an advantage. You can buy them practically anywhere.
There are limitations, of course. Let's face it - you can't expect it to perform like an expensive industrial model either. It is made for home use...for the kind of sewing a homemaker would do, such as draperies, canvas totes, denims. I tried it on a pair of jeans that were to be re-fashioned. The machine sewed right over the belt loop folded edge without a hic-up. Like any other machine, it must be treated with care and respect. If you abuse it, you're going to have trouble.
I love this machine!

This is the most rugged machine we have ever bought. It not only does a good job on cottons & polysatins but, can also sew through 1/8" thick leather as well. At medieval armoury we make alot of Medieval atire as well as leather products & this is the first machine that can do it all with out a problem. This machine is easy to use and works well with every foot attachment we need from zipper feet to walking feet attachments. With some of our clothing the material can be up to 12 layers thick & this machine plows through them like it was nothing. Best machine we have ever bought!!!!

I'm not much of a sewer but at times need to make or fix something - if you can do it in a straight line I'm your girl! My mother was a beautiful seamstress (although I wish now I would have let her teach me something) and she bought me a Singer Sewing Machine for my birthday. I thought it was a really stupid gift for me but over the years I've grown to love it. We have a condo in SC and spend about half the year there and for some reason I always need a sewing machine there to fix or make something. I tried to get the same model as my old one, it's about 25 years old, but I think anyone who has one knows they never wearout. Anyway, this site showed different Singer models and all that they could do. I had purchased a couple of Brother Sewing Machines but they were all junk so after watching a few of the videos I purchased another Singer. I love it! It even has an automatic needle threader and sometimes I can even get it to work! I think they could have made the automatic threader just a little more user friendly and I would have given it five stars. I never have to worry about how heavy the material is to go through - it goes like a champ. Everyone should have one!

It is a basic machine that sews fast and does sew over many thick layers. That being said that's just about it. So if you want fancy stitches, This is not it. If you want to sew upholstry for that outdoor patio set and hem or sew jeans or make corsets, this is it.
I would reccoment it for someone who just wants to do Basic stitching or piecing or teach their grandson/daughter to sew.
